I was lucky enough to visit the medieval abbey and church of Mont St. Michel this summer.

The abbey is built on a rocky island just off the coast in northern France and the buildings are about 1,000 years old give or take a few hundred years!.....the place is heavily fortified and was unsuccessfully besieged several times in the 15th century.

We spent the night in a medieval timber framed and timber shingle roofed hotel on the island so I was able to take plenty of photos some of which I have posted here on the forum before.

The first morning that we arrived it was misty with heavy rain falling and I managed to get this shot thanks to the waterproofing of my D700 and 16-35vr lens - the most difficullt part was keeping the raindrops off the front of the lens.

On the full resolution version of this photo you can see the tiny figures of people walking along the causeway on the right of the photo together with the umbrellas thay are carrying.

Breathtaking capture of the light. Superb composition with the clouds and the water reflections. Makes me want the 16-35 even more.

Thanks for that!....when its raining hard, like on the day of this photo, it's certainly very comforting to know that I've got a camera body and lens combination that is capable of shrugging off the water.

My last camera body and wide angle lens combo was a D40 with Sigma 10-20 and I used to avoid getting it wet which was a shame as often the best landscape photo opportunities happen when the weather is changeable.

I really like what you have done with the B&W conversion. Suits the mood of the mist and rain. A bit spooky though as I have exactly the same composition but with a sunset.
Thanks Kevin!.....I was really lucky with the light & weather that day although my wife thought I was mad to want to go out taking photos.

I had a look at your lovely sunset version - as you say, we must have been standing in almost the exact same spot!

Its one of those locations I've fancied going to for years, but it has somehow never fit in with plans. St Michael's Mount in Cornwall is about as near as I've got! I'll make the effort one of these days, I can see my self being torn between painting and photography.

Love the minimalist mood, Ian !

Sadly haven't got time today to find the others in different threads but hope you will add them to your 'France' gallery in due course

Photography can be a very selfish hobby :-) Put it this way, when I took my gf to Colorado a couple of years ago, I luckily made a special purchase of a top pocket Fuji F50fd. I am still living off the brownie points :-))

Hello Ian! Wonderful image. B&W conversion, composition and contrast, all
are perfect.
In the past I've had comments that I'm showing too much space in my shots,
not concentrating enough on the main subject.
Your images seem to suffer from the same 'defect'. That's probably why I like
them so much! :)

Cheers,

André
