I am new to this forum, having just purchased a 117. I am a long-time (and I mean "long time") film camera user. I have two Leicas (M & R), a Nikkormat (great old camera) and a Mamiya med.format. All the cameras I have owned have had provision for a cable release - a wonderful tool for a camera on a tripod. But I have yet to hear of a digital camera, even high-end ones, that has such a convenience. Does anyone know why this is so.?

It's called a wired remote.

Get with the times and technology. And learn how to look up the basics.

Just don't be put off by the huge learning curve, or the occasional brusqueness here...I find they are both good for my humility :-)

You will find the RM-DR1 (remote) at Sony style or Technoweb.

'sfunny how my photo-phobic kids became shutterbug parents.

For the Sonys including the 7x7 there is RM-DR1 which includes power, zoom, and shutter release.

Many lower price digicams have time delay shutter which can substitue for release cable in some situations.

And there are third party vendors who sell controllers which can make some cameras do the time lapse function.

Quite an abrasive reply, Jarett, especially for someone with a crucifix and a fish sign on his website. There's a Bible verse or two I could use as a stinging rebuke, don't you think.
Sorry... but mean people suck.

If you go easy on people, they grow up to be needy, lazy, and do nothing for themselves. Look at Gamorrah. Look at all the times Jesus rebuked the Apostles.

"He that spareth the rod hateth his son, but he who loveth him chastiseth him betimes" (Prov. 13:24).

"Chasten thy son while there is still hope and let not thy soul spare for his crying" (Prov. 19:18).

Proverbs 11:14 - When there is no skillful direction, the people fall; but there is salvation in the multitude of counselors

Proverbs 6:6-11 - Go to the ant, you lazy one; see its ways and become wise. Although it has no commander, officer or ruler, it prepares its food even in the summer; it has gathered its food supplies even in the harvest. How long, you lazy one, will you keep lying down? When will you rise up from your sleep? A little more sleep, a little more slumbering, a little more folding of the hands in lying down, and your poverty will certainly come just like some rover, and your want like an armed man.

If Jesus was not abrasive to his own 12 apostles, they would not have accomplished anything when he was gone.

Get the wired remote. You won't be sorry. Abit pricey but worth it.

I haven't look at this for quite a while, but wasn't it part of a tripod?

Thanks.

There is a remote tripod but you can buy just the wired remote. I don't recommend the remote tripod tho. Just my opinion here.
Thanks.

It's an issue of being an EDUCATED CONSUMER, not being a 'know it all'.

If we just go off and buy stuff without researching, it give Sony the motivation to put out junky products they havent even bothered QCing. (Like the non-focusing 717s)

And by the way, you have a typo on your Profile page, and your domain name doesnt work. =)

To all my new friends (including Mr. Jarett)

Thank you for your very informative replies. This is going to be a great learning tool for me. And to Mr. Jarett, I have "turned the other cheek"
