Hi all,

I have an analogue EOS 50e + EF 24-85 lens + 380 EX flash since 1995.

I've been using digital since 2005, but only w/ point and shoots.

I'm know considering buying a DSLR and Canon is my obvious choice.

I'm looking at:
  • a 500D body for 575 Eur
  • a 500D kit for 659 Eur
  • a 550D body for 758 Eur
  • a 550D kit for 819 Eur
(prices at Pixmania. probably there's better prices elsewhere)

Regarding my current material, what advise can you give me?

1.) Should I buy only the body and use the EF 24-85?

I've read not so good reviews about this lens, but since this camera have a cropped sensor, maybe the lens performs better than w/ 135 mm film?

2.) What about the 2 cameras, 500d vs 550d?
(I don't care so much about video)

Thanks!

What are you planning on taking photos of? If low light go for the 550D. I would go for the kit in either choice. If you can get a good deal on the camera 18-55 and 55-250 lens combo I would go that way if you think you would use the 55-250.

This question has been asked a bunch you might want to do a search and see all the feed back that has been given to others.

I took a course in art last winter. I learnt the difference between a fine oil painting, and a mechanical thing, like a photograph. The photograph shows only the reality. The painting shows not only the reality, but the dream behind it.

I'll cut to the chase. I would (hands down) recommend the 550D w/ kit lens. regardless of quality the 24mm at the wide end isn't very wide on a crop (about 39mm equiv is my mental math is right). Plus it is decently sharp and has IS. All of these make it worth the 60 Eu difference.

Get it now or you'll likely end up spending a lot more in a little while ;)

I think Steve already answered this: "I would (hands down) recommend the 550D w/ kit lens". As he explained, the kit lens is fairly sharp and has IS and at 18mm is much wider than the 24mm, thus making it worth the extra cost. You are looking at the 18-55 IS kit lens aren't you?
What about the EF 24-85 f 3.5-4.5, would you reccommend it?

Or should I buy the kit lens?

Thanks!

yes, i/m looking to the 18-55 kit.

I just happen to have a 24-85mm ef canon zoom lens from 1995, which in a 1.6x cropped sensor would give me something like 38-135.

And i'm wondering if this lens is good enough for a 500d / 550d (appart from the fact that isn't wide...)

Well the lens won't get any worse than it was on film.. it will just get longer (kinda). So if you're happy with the IQ then by all means keep using it, but the price for the 18-55IS kit lens in a bundle is far below what you can buy it for anywhere else, so (I think anyway) it is a bad idea to not get it with the body and save the money.
