Beautiful first night of Autumn here, so here are few shots taken with the K7. C&C welcome.

The very near: Gulf Fritillary:
DA*300, f/7.1, 1/180, ISO 1600, flash fired, down-sized for web viewing.

The far: tonight's moon:
DA*300, f/8, 1/800, ISO 320, 100% crop.

tonight's moon:
Bigma at 500mm, f/8, 1/1000, ISO 500, 100% crop.

The very far: Jupiter, with Ganymede, Io, Callisto, and Europa (left to right):
Bigma at 500mm, f/7.1, 1/4, ISO 500, 100% crop.

Thanks Math Guy for showing that shots of Jupiter's Galilean moons can be captured with our gear.

Well done!

I tried that also yesterday night. Too hazy for Jupiter, but full moon was ok.

Hi there, these are great shots, I love your moon shots, (our moon, I'm talking about here), and the butterfly is beautiful. The shots of Jupiter with its four moons are excellent. Now then, the question, were these shots captured hand held, or did you have to use a tripod? I'm talking about the moon shots, (both ours, and Jupiter's). Thanks for sharing these with us.

Thanks. Jupiter will be very close for a while, so I'm sure you'll have more opportunities.

Very nice!

I combined the last two, with dappled clouds (and sadly, no decent support :( so Jupiter is more comet than planet)

Allan,

Thanks. The butterfly was shot hand-held, but the moon and Jupiter shots were taken using a tripod. I forgot to bring my cable release, so I used the 2-sec timer delay option. The breeze was puffy, so I had to wait to shoot between puffs. Now I need to vary exposure times in hopes of getting Jupiter's cloud bands that I can combine with a longer exposure like this one to get an image with both bands and moons. Extreme HDR photography :-)

I can't help but think how Galileo would have have reacted to what showed up on my lcd screen after these shots combined with what Math Guy got several days ago, although I'm sure the Inquisitors would not have changed their demands. Truthholders! :-(

Nice cloud effects. Our evening last night started like that, but luckily the clouds moved away.

Thank you for the great info. I look forward to seeing more of your Jupiter pics, especially with the ideas that you have mapped out here.

Golly, this is refreshing after all the hysterical tosh that's filled the forum for the last few days ...

Nice to see what can be done with relatively affordable equipment.

Thank you for following up with a longer lens.

The funny thing is that I had no intention of photographing it, knowing that it would be a tiny portion of the frame. I was just going to look through binoculars. But when I saw the moons, I was astounded. I could not believe I was able to see Jupiter's moons that clearly. So I had to take a few shots of it then.

Anyway, nicely done with the Bigma!

Russ,

Thanks. It was a revelation to me as well, but after seeing what math guy got with his 300, I wanted to see what Bigma could do.

Timo,

Yeah, some of that was getting boring, so I had to go out and shoot. I think all of us were surprised at the capability of our cameras to capture Jupiter and its moons. Can't wait for Saturn's opposition now.
