My wife uses a Nikon D200 with no intentions of upgrading to full-frame anytime soon. She wants a good zoom lens. As folks are moving to full frame cameras, are you seeing a trend to sell off used DX lenses?

I'm trying to figure out if there will be good deals on a used zoom lens out there.

Markets are dynamic and change all the time.

Used lenses are worth a lot more today than they were a year ago. This is due to the global recession and currency weakness, as a result of which Nikon and others have put up their prices. How much they will have gone up will depend upon the exchange rate between Japan and your country.

Outside of this unusual situation, the longer term trend is for popular lenses to fall in price by around 20% per annum. This compares to the bodies falling by around 30% per annum.

I see no significant falls due to people switching to FF. The FF market is still quite small, whereas many more people buy the cheaper D40 type cameras, then want to upgrade to something better than the 18-55mm.

I suspect that the best bargains remain the kit lenses, which get dumped as users upgrade. I reckon the best bargains among them are: 18-70mm, 55-200mm, 50mm f1.8 AF-D, 24-120mm VR. Provided that you buy carefully, used lenses are often great value for money.

craigslist. i'm currently trying to sell my 18-105 VR or trade it for an 18-55 VR plus cash.

there's more of a market for canon lenses, but nikon lenses do exist. other places to try are B&H and adorama's used section, keh.com, or there's always amazon.

and the market does go both ways. when i switched from canon to nikon i sold 6 canon lenses and a body on craigslist. it took me about a month, but i did it.

The market for DX lenses is still strong. I think the predictions for the demise of DX are premature. Granted DX might someday go away, or might be a specialty niche for low priced DSLR's, but I don't think that will happen until cameras with FF sensors come way down in price.

Since FX sensors will always be more expensive than DX sensors because they are always larger and larger silicon is more expensive than smaller silicon and because DX sensors are getting more and more and more capable every generation and DX lenses are generall smaller, lighter and less costly than FX lenses, I think it's more likely that FX is relegated to the super high ISO and super high resolution niches while DX takes over more and more of the territory now occupied by FX. My conclusion, DX lenses won't be going away anytime soon.

She will probably want a 17-55 2.8. They have been around $1000+ used since they were released. Don't expect to see a good one any cheaper for a long time, if ever.

Everything happens for a reason. #1 reason: poor planning

Of course there's a market for DX lenses. Look at the new DX bodies in the last few months (or year): D300s, D3000, D3100, D5000, D7000. Eventually the possible D400 will most likely be a DX body as well.

That's a good indication that DX is here to stay.

I agree. i don't think the move to FF is that great or Nikon and canon would be backing off on new DX models which they clearly are not. A good Dx lens on a good DX body is a beautiful combination! People will always buy a nice used one at a reasonable price!

Go over to Fredmiranda and look for lenses in the buy & sell section there. You will find many Nikon listings daily and 90% of the people over there are great to deal with.
