Hi, sorry to bother but have a question that i need help to get an answer (if there is one). Wich should i invest first? A good camera or a good lenses? I'm thinking about upgrade to a FF 5D MkII. The problem is that i dnt have money to buy both things, the camera and the lenses. I bought last April the new 550D, and i'm really disapointed with that. Is a lens problem? (bought it with the 18-55 Is and 55-250 IS), or a camera problem? I used to work film cameras for 30 years, and now that I turned into digital i find all pictures too much soft. I mostly work with architecture, and works of art (paintings and sculptures) that i have to take mostly inside very dark churches. And i need, clear sharp pictures. What do you recomend? Invest in the new body, or a new lenses, like the 24-70 L, or 24-105 IS, 16-35 LII, a 18-200, or a 18-135? Thank you for your time.

This forum is for Canon compacts. While you will get answers here you're better off posting in the relevant forums. There are lens forums and FF camera forums.

For what its worth i would say go for a good lens. The two you have are pretty average.

Have you looked at the Canon 17-55IS f/2.8? Its very sharp and ideal for indoor low light shooting. Its on my 40D 99% of the time.

The only downside is you wouldn't be able to use it on a FF camera if you do upgrade.

you only have general snap shot lenses so far on a crop body - not going to meet your film expectations.

sell everything

buy a used 5d i for about $1000

start with a 50 f1.4 - it is one of the sharpest lenses in the world.

next add a 100 f2.8 IS macro

good luck!

Ive seen plenty of sharp images from all the canon's, some better than others of course but if the images are soft its not the camera IMO (unless its faulty).

To the OP. Why dont you just take your camera to a camera shop and try other lenses before possibly wasting a lot of money on a 5DMII and being stuck with no lenses, as the two you have wont fit a FF camera so you will need to buy new ones anyway. And then you're back to having to save up for good lenses again.

A good lens will work wonders IME.

You could buy a full frame camera and find the problem isn't the camera, it's the glass, and now you have no money to spend on glass. Or you could buy some really nice glass and find out that whatever you don't like about the photos (perhaps it's just some vague characteristic) can only be done with full frame, and now you're stuck with glass that won't work with your full frame camera.

If you can borrow (even in the store) different cameras and try them out that might give you more information about which way to go. My local camera store (National Camera Exchange, which despite it's name is only a local chain) will let you bring in your own memory card and use their cameras for comparison.

Thanks a lot for you comments. Unfortunely where i live there is no place where i can do that, even to try a camera is very hard, since all displayed cameras dont have a charged battery. Not even there is a place where i could rent one. :-(
