Have just pre-ordered the 14n :o) Can cancel without penalty, so will be looking to get some questions answered before the release, and if it still looks like the best camera for me then I am earlyish on the list, otherwise I just cancel and go buy the S2!

Questions.

NOISE. Will be interested to see how the 14n handles noise. The S2 looked superb at 1600 ISO, and if the 14n can perform to this level at 800 ISO then that's great. The other thing is the long exposure noise levels. Will this camera have a noise reduction system (that doesn't double the recording time)?

POWER. The battery of the 14n was quoted somewhere as being good for only 200 shots! Even a set of AA's on the S2 are good for over double that with a Microdrive. What is the deal here? I thought CCD's used more power than CMOS sensors, so why the low life time on the 14n's battery? I thought the battery on the 14n was a LIon battery which should perform better than some 1700mAh nicad's!

LENSES. It has been said that to get the quality out of the S2, you need to use high quality lenses. Is this also true on the 14n? I am looking at buying Nikon ED lenses if I get the S2 or 14n, so would like to know if these are "adequate" for the camera?

Excuse a non-pro for asking these questions and ordering this camera (!), I just can't see the point in making a half jump to the S2 when the 14n is over twice the resolution and much better built than the S2.

Thanks,

Nick

I do not have the S2, but have (horrible) experience with DSLR using AA. Forget about DSLR w/o rechargable MiHM or rechargable lithium. The CR123 used by S2 is not rechargable per se.

Glad to hear that 14n uses rechargable lithium.

Nick, usually it is the case that Nikon's ED lenses are also their finest. Threre are a couple of exceptions. The finest Nikon zooms include the 17-35 2.8 ED, 28-70 2.8 ED, 35-70 2.8, 80-200 2.8 AFS. The excellent prime lenses Nikon makes include the 20 2.8, 24 2.8, 35 2.0, 50 1.8, 85 1.8, 105 2.8 Micro, 135 2.0 D, 180 2.8 ED 300 2.8 ED ...

NOISE. When we get the samples out we can show the noise levels at all iso speeds ,I think you will love the blue channel . we are still having trouble on the distribution method this files are huge and it seems a criminal to jpeg them.I am trying to fix up some form of CD distribution.

POWER. 200-300 shots - remember the size of the files and the difference between the figures is the usage of display and flash etc
LENSES. I think this is a two edged sword -what we have is a full frame sensor so you are using the whole of the lens again . In the past digital just used the best area of the optics , so "high quality optics" just puts everyone back were they were in film days. One thing to bear in mind is subject -you don't ever want to shoot portraits on this camera with a really sharp lens.(unless your models have perfect skin)
Storage - while you are waiting for product investigate storage, 76 raw files = 1Gb we are internally using DVD writable

Now I know that everyone want the camera now , but if it was my money I'd wait and see the independant reviews and compare the features for my final usage. See guys we don't want your money we want you as long term customers

Mark,

I notice the 28 prime is not on the list. Apparently for good reason from what I have seen elsewhere (at least for the cheaper version.)

Is there a 28mm prime in the $500 range that you would recommend?

I have had one recomendation for a third party 28, but I am a little leary. Think we are starting to see some of the flaws in these lenses as our sensors get better.

I will probably buy the 28-70 zoom or equivalent, but want a reasonably priced prime for times when I want to work light. I'm coming from Canon so I am just starting to figure out the Nikon line. Also doing research on the Nikon forum and elsewhere.

Thanks!
Michael

Michael,

The 28 2.8D is a great lens and many feel the 28 1.4D is even better. The 2.8 is definitely under $500 USD.

I didn't mean for that to be an exhaustive list -- just examples. Sorry...

As far as battery life, it will depend on your usage. On my D1X, shooting in RAW onto a 1GB microdrive I get about 200 or so images before I need to replace the battery. So with the files being so much larger, and longer write times probably, 200 would seem a resasonable estimate. We will have to wait for a street version to know for sure.

Thanks Mark. The Photodo rating for the 28 f/2.8 was 3.2. The 35 f/2.0 was rated at 3.7, so it seemed there was a bit of a gap. The 50mm was around 4.1 or so.

The 28 f/1.4 is a bit heavy and a bit pricy for what I want. Something to keep the camera smaller and less conspicous for street work when travelling light.

I will look around a bit to see what I can find on the 28 2.8. A friend is somewhat skeptical about Photodo ratings, but it is a place to start. Probably just order it and do a quick test.

Just confirmed my 14n order with Calumet, though at $4,800 it may cost as much as the 1Ds with my switch from Canon - lenses, flash, film body as backup. Not too happy!

Thanks again.

Best,
Michael
