K-5 Live view AF so fast (Video)

Really fast and, of course, accurate.

Now... it would have been nice then, to have an articulated OLED screen... but maybe for next model???

For those with the K-7, disable Face Detect and it doubles the speed, but still probably 5 times longer than that :)

My Sigma 8-16mm takes about 4 or 5 seconds to focus, and it is wrong half the time :)

My Pentax lenses take half that time, but still slow. I am impressed. The aperture says f/2.8, so I am unsure which lens, but that does eliminate a lot of them.

Is the zoom with the focus new too? I haven't tried with the k-7 but that's the first time I've seen an automatic zooming in LV.

Why OLED? Is it smaller or tougher? For smart phones OLED has been a flop--high power consumption and poor outdoor performance. Not that it's that huge of a deal, but seems like this would be even more of a disadvantage on a camera.

eric,

my sigma 50-150 did the same on my kx. racked back and forth and stopped at the wrong focus.

i sent it in to sigma and they updated the fw. it came back focusing properly in live view.

you may want to check w/sigma if there is an updated fw for your lens.

jordan

I think it seems faster because of the zoom effect, but it is fast anyway :)

Now this is a nifty feature, and answers the question for those who wonder what the focus area really is. I wonder why Pentax doesn't make more of it?

You never saw the samsung galaxy S "super" amoled screen.

It out perform any LCD / amoled screen technology in any condition.

Unfortunatly samsung seems to keep its "super" amoled technology for himself.

They have better contrast, they have better resolution, and lower power consumption... and most important: blacks are true blacks.

None of that matters outdoors. Brightness and power consumption are what matters. I can see how AMOLED might be good for watching movies in a dark living room though.

I did see it--in a store it looks about the same. The supposed darker blacks aren't detectable in normal ambient light. But in bright light you can definitely see it washing out worse. Granted, we're not talking huge differences either way. Regular LCD's aren't terribly visible in bright light either.

The reviews I read said the same thing--more power consumption and hard to see outdoors. You can improve power consumption by having a GUI that favors black or dark pixels, but in photography that's harder to do--photos will be what they will be.

As an aside, I've read Samsung is willing to sell them, but they don't get many takers.

I don't know where you heard that, but Samsung has had so much trouble keeping up with demand for their Super AMOLED screens that HTC had to switch to a standard LCD for some of their smartphones due to shortages. And although it is a beautiful screen to look at, I find that colors look over-saturated and un-natural; probably not a great choice for reviewing pics in the field.

I had a closer look at that video in my NLE software and it looks like it takes about 1.7 seconds from the time he lowers his finder to the button until the box turns green and there is a beep and the exposure is adjusted. I may do a similar test with the K-7 if I get a chance. It is actually pretty good now with the latest firmware but not that good.
