Sony today announced upgrades and a road map which will keep NEX E-system adopters more than happy – especially those who have added NEX to their Alpha outfit. Diehard Alpha purists will be less delighted.

At the photokina press conference, a two-year rollout of additional NEX lenses was announced including a fast Carl Zeiss wide-angle, a premium quality G-series standard zoom, a macro lens, a portrait lens, a wide-angle zoom, and a prime telephoto.

Firmware upgrades for NEX-3 and NEX-5 to enable Aperture presetting for video, and AF operation of SAM and SSM Alpha mount lenses with the Sony adaptor, were promised for October with a similar upgrade for the NEX VG-10 in November. The NEX 3 and 5 upgrades will allow assignable functions for the buttons, including direct access to ISO setting or HDR (amongst other choices).

Sony went out of their way – as on their stand – to highlight the explosion of 3rd party adaptors making almost every lens in existence usable with the NEX body’s 18mm register. They announced they were already working with partners to enable production of NEX adaptors and even NEX compatible lenses, but could not reveal anything yet. The opening up of the system to 3rd party makers would, said Toru Katsumoto, help revive photography itself.

With NEX now accounting for half of all mirrorless/compact interchangeable lens sector sales, they were confident of its future.

The bad news, for many, will be that the Alpha 700 replacement – optimistically shown with a vertical grip, 500mm f/4 G SSM lens and a new flash – will have a fixed Translucent mirror just like the A33 and A55. Paul Genge of Sony UK confirmed to us after the presentation that it will not have a flip-up mode to allow shooting without this extra sheet of glass in place.

As tests of the A33 and A55 have shown clearly, the Translucent mirror creates visible bright-edge ghosting or secondary imaging in the vertical direction. For many users, this will be a no-go option; they will look at the Pentax K-5 and the Nikon D7000 and see a ‘pure’ optical path from lens to sensor (although we all know the cover glass assembly of the sensor removes this possibility).

Perhaps the real A700 of tomorrow will be the Sigma SD-1 – the 1.5X factor, beautifully designed, 15 megapixel (true!) Foveon machine claimed as ever to match a much larger real pixel count – 48 megapixels. Well, Sigma need not make such claims. 15 megapixels is enough. It was enough with Bayer pixels. 15 real Foven RGB coincident location pixels will be one amazing camera.

Today was a wonderful day. Summer temperatures. Everyone was sitting round outside in the open spaces at photokina and it was like a big barbecue party with all the wurst-stalls grilling away. The sunniest photokina we’ve ever been to. And there is an amazing level of optimism here about trade and the market. We had a recession – unless someone screws it up, we are in for a boom again. There is so much fantastic stuff coming and China is both the market and the innovator in so many ways.

Thanks zep.

Well, at least we know for sure now, and each of us can take a sensible course of action.

I really do think that this strategy is the only way to really eat into canikon. It's a very bold and potentially perilous move for an untried tech, so you can criticise sony for many things, but they don't lack for balls or vision.

Those photos of the supposed A77 mockup just aren't correct. They look like the A750 mockup. No swivel LCD screen and no protruding EVF which are both a must have. I'll wait for the specs and performance of the released A77 before passing judgement but many wont be happy.

I was about to get a D3100 right away to use my nikkor lenses in a smaller package. But, with the announcements from Sony, that is now on hold! The new NEX FW is welcome and the launch of the wide CZ next year resolves my number one issue so far with NEX.. .ie. the availability of premium native lenses.. i dont care how much it costs.

Kind of surprised their is no OV model but think I was leaning toward A77 anyway.

Hopefully they will now concentrate on releasing this with 7 level features and that new 4MP EV screen I have heard rumours of.

A lot on unhappy traditional SLR guys and girls are not going to like this idea but I think it is good overall.

Indeed. Traditionalists are spoilt for choice, with better cameras than ever from Nikon, Pentax, Sigma, and Canon. Why should Sony offer more of the same? What is the point of releasing a camera that is essentially a D7000 in Alpha mount? just to keep traditionalists with Alpha glass happy?

The one thing that remains to be seen is the future of Sony FF. Will we see traditional OVF models, SLT, or no FF? Personally An A99 really appeals to me, especially with a relatively lowres sensor.

right from the head guy in England, at the press conference, that no OV 7 series - the switch over has begun.

Kind of makes sense - with the 7D, coming D300 replacement and D7000 how would they capture many new enthusiasts with a similar camera? This might do it.

They will still retain most of the NEX and A33/55 upgraders who like their system.

Well I hope they make the A77 the camera that every enthusiast will want to own. I've been waiting for the A750 for so long now but when the A55 came along it turned my head. I just hope the A77 doesn't dissappoint.

I really hope sony releases both A77 and A750, although I would go A77.

My question, what is the new A flash and new standard zoom?

How does the new A flash compare with current $199 F42AM?

new standard zoom for advanced APS-C? that 16-80/2.8-3.5 is for real?

Did I read this correctly? The A700 replacement will be the A77 or is Sony still planning to release an A750 sometime in the future?

The reason I ask is that they've wheeled out the same A750 mockup but I've read that the A700 replacement will be the A77. I'm confused.

I think a some are reading it that way; however, it does not say that it is the a700 replacement. It only says that it is for the advanced segment. IMHO, Sony is going with what is hot; what created the most buzz and showing that they have more in store for the new technology.

Zeiss taste...Beercan budget!

I am not looking for a new camera so I have time to see how things play out. I will continue to not buy anything A-mount specific in case I don't like what Sony offers. My first reaction to the SLT-only news is that it's a mistake especially since there is no mode for the mirror to flip. While ghosting may not be a huge issue it is still an issue and not something one would expect on a camera at this level. I am also not sure an EVF is the right way to go at this time for an AA camera.

You may both be wrong. What seems clear from the statement below is that Sony will supply demand. If there's no demand for FF then Sony wont make them.

In an interview on CNET ASIA (via Noisycameras), Katsumoto said the SLT pro-model should arrive “within one year.”

How much higher up the line will Sony take the translucent mirror approach, also called a pellicle mirror? Katsumoto wouldn’t say, but it’s possible to use it on full-frame models whose sensors are as large as a frame of 35mm film for better light-gathering abilities than mainstream cameras with smaller sensors.

“It can be used for full-frame as well,” he said, but what Sony will do depends on customer needs. “Many people like the optical viewfinder, but from a technological point of view we think [translucent mirror designs] are better.”

Quoting from http://news.cnet.com/8301-30685_3-20017122-264.html

""Based on initial feedback and our own study, we have decided to utilize this unique technology for an advanced model of the a-mount camera," Turo Katsumoto, head of Sony's Alpha business, said at a press conference at the Photokina show here. "We are confident this camera will satisfy the needs of serious photographers."
In an interview, Katsumoto said the model should arrive "within one year."

What I gatter from this interview is that the a-mount, FF and OVF are quite alive in Sony's Plans!!

Hmmm..., actually, it seems this "ghost issue" is more esotheric than it's been claimed for! I've seen many pictures made with A33/A55 in those conditions in this Forum and others and can say that very few ( less than 5% ? ) showed minute light dot under some strong lights, those were sometimes only seen at a 200% view!

The Sigma SD-1 really looks to be an awesome camera, mostly due to the new Foveon sensor. I believe ( hope ) the one shown at Photokina is a mock-up, since its surface finishing is deplorable.

Thing is they dont have EITHER a77 or a750, thats whats killing them..and it seems there will almost be enough time for another round of releases before it truly arrives. I would definitely have given the a77 a chance but alas no a77 either just some mock up we seen 6 months ago.

Think about what you just wrote; it looks like sony are getting killed on this forum but in the real word they can't make A33 and A55 quick enough to sell.

Try to keep a little perspective. The A7 market is a big deal to many here, but in terms of commercial impact it's always been tiny for sony.
