Sigma shocked everyone

I am not familiar with Foveon, but this SD1 is really interesting. By my calculation, this new sensor is just about 1/3 or 33% bigger in area than the old one. How then does the 46MP come from, if the old one is only 14.1 MP? Are things packed much denser?

Yes, they must have cut off about 36% in width and height of each pixel.

Yep, much more dense. They probably found a new way to fabricate it without affecting much sensitivity. But frankly I'd have preferred a lower resolution if that allows for video at least 720p or even 848x480. at 24fps, and more importantly higher low light performance. Lets see...

Although I haven't done a survey, more people I have talked to think live-view on a dslr is a waste of time and money. I have the D300 and feel the same way. I think it has good value for MF close-up work on the DP1/2 but that is about the limit.

Video would eat the camera alive performance-wise. I am glad it has neither.
Video doesn't affect the performance.

But it requires certain read-out modes speed on the sensor. Because it has 3 layers, it must be a challenge.

Sigma did shock me. I thought Sigma bought Foveon to make a conventional Bayer full frame sensor, but it made a 1.5x crop Foveon sensor instead. That is progress though, since the 1.7x crop format finally bites the dust. It may even signal a future Foveon full frame sensor, but that would require a lot of raw file processing power.
Sigma's playing this game of hopscotch for all the marbles it would seem. I don't think I saw any predictions of the SD-1 coming from Sigma...

It just goes to show that there really was a point to buying Foveon, and that we should all be grateful to Sigma for keeping a truly diverse technology alive. The story of Foveon has many new chapters remaining it would seem, even as some had closed the book...

When it is released I can make 4 shot fulls spherical panos with the 8mm instead of 8 shots as it is now, and the resolution is great enough for that
:)

And big Gigapixels will blow out everything out of the water what has been seen so far

I am afraid you are too caught up in tech spec sheets and not in photography.

The X100 seems so far a great photographic tool. Great interface, features well thought out. We know it's coming on 2011. We don't know when the SD1 is coming out and what bugs or what quirks it will have given Sigma's history.

Both cameras are at different markets- the X100 being near pocketable. The SD1 is a DSLR. Buying an SD1 doesn't take away the need for those who wanted an X100. And it could be said vice versa.

For street life the SD1 may not be as good of a match as the X100, just like the X100 won't hold a candle to an SD1 for landscapes.

not all cross AF sensors are built the same way.

you are just playing with fire.

He's right- new lenses weather sealed are needed to really take advantage of this.

I must admit that I didnt think Sigma had another SD camera in them, but this takes it to another level. I expect the images will be spectacular.

I'm not getting one of these ever, I'm 99% sure of that, but I'm glad the Foveon/Sigma thing is alive. This should be one sweet camera.

Also the weathersealing is strange, as with the current Sigma lens line up it is totally useless.
Why do you say that?

And think very carefully before you reply, since I've already mentioned in a couple of posts about the ability of both the old and new 50-500 Sigma lenses to endure thorough dousing in salt water, with no ill effect.

PS: I don't think Sigma shocked everyone. I think a lot don't care. That's how strong the brand is. Or many don't care because they don't understand what a 15 MP Foveon means... (very erroneously)
Well, they shocked me all right!
10,000V nonetheless! :)
