romoto,

What settings such as JPEG or NEF were you shooting, if JPEG, what were the settings, large fine or something else, what about incamera sharping? Just got my D100 last week, also got Thom Hogan's eBook, very helpful.

Never mind about the shutter speed, I found that info. When you
got you new lense, did you go down to ISO 800? Also, is that
80-200mm the AFS model and if it is, where did you get it from?
Doesn't seem like I can find one in stock. I would rather get the
VR one coming out but doesn't look like it will be out for a while.
I forgot to bring my mono pod at the last game. I get less OOF
pictures with my D100 than with my E10. The autofocus on the D100
is much better. I'm still learning to use my nikon. I shot mostly
at 1600 but I think with 2.8 I can probably shoot at a lower iso or
at a higher shutter speed.

Your pictures are very good. Hope to see you at todays game

I looked at your UH photos again. At the Tulsa game, what ISO is
you use? I ordered a D100 yesterday. I hope it comes in this
weekend so I can play around with it before the San Jose St. game.
Since I won't have it for very long before the game, are there any
tips and settings that you can share with me? Thanks Irwin
I again started with iso 1600. But late in the game I was talking to one of the Star-bulletin photographers and found out he was using iso 800 with a 2.8 f300 lens. Which BTW was 20 years old with no auto focus. So I switch my iso to 1250 very late in the game. My shutter speed was 400-500. I found that my pictures were alright and I probably could even go to a lower iso. Earlier in the game I had been using iso 1600 with even slower shutter speeds and my pictures were really a little overexposed. I shoot jpegs fine with normal sharpening & Auto WB.

I just sent my D100 to update my firmware and hope to get it by the next game. What lens are you going to use? I use my 28-70 AFS & 80-200D at the games. Look for me at the next game. You can try any of my lens if you want.

I have a 80-200 D AFS on order from US 1 Camera. I made sure it was an AFS model. I haven't dealt with them before so we shall see if they follow through. Also I am getting a 50mm f1.8. I'll probably use that for some sideline shots but hate to change lenses on the field because of the dust on CCD problem. It seems like you shoot a lot from the UH sidelines. I shoot mainly on the visitor side. There's a lot less people on that side. Ususally I only shoot the 1st half then enjoy the game from my seat in the 2nd. But with the new camera, I'm planning on staying the whole game. I want to get a lot better for the Alabama game. I hope to print some out and getting them signed at next year's Spring Challenge. I want to get as good as possible so practice, practice, practice. I'll probably be on the UH side midway through the 2nd half when the crowd thins out.

I think you'll be happy with the 80-200 AFS lens. I have just the D version and find it does the job especially because it's 2.8. I don't think you'll really need to use your 50mm 1.8. I find the 80mm does fine even for shots of the players on the bench. I like to stay around the bench to shoot closeups of the players when they come off the field. With the D100 there is a learning curve to get used to the auto focus. I find that setting the focus mode to S is better for getting more in focus pictures because the camera doesn't fire until something is in focus. I used a monopod at the last game but I don't think it's really necessary with the 80-200.

BTW how do you get your field passes? I'll keep an eye out for you at the next game. I hope I get my camera back before the next game. If not I may have to use my E-10. The Alabama game should be good because it's a earlier start time. I probably can use my E-10 and my D100.

I shoot pictures for Rainbowsportsnetwork.com and post my pictures on their premium service. That's why I don't put much on pbase. Only when I have a question or want to show something. How did you get your field pass? Also, I hope to be doing some volleyball and basketball. Email me if you want, its under my profile.

You have a 50/50 chance of them following through. They have a HORRIBLE reputation, but I decided to originally order my D100 from them (they're in NYC, about an hour from where I live). They gave me the same price as everyone else ($1,999 plus shipping) and said they had them in stock. I ordered and got an email from them stating that they couldn't take my credit card because my bank of issue wouldn't allow them to process--which frightened me. As it turns out, they are on a fraud "watch list" that tracks merchants with a REALLY BAD track record of bad charges and forced refunds--my bank won't let them charge one dollar, but it's up to individual banks.

Anyway, they wanted me to provide them with a different card, which I was (stupidly) willing to do, but they also pushed and pushed for me to buy a ridiculously expensive Mack warranty (red flag #2), and when I decided I didn't want anything other then the US retail camera, they suddenly claimed that they HAD to charge a SIX PERCENT (6%!) insurance fee for shipping, which was $120! I said that UPS insures for $0.35 per $100, which is like $7. They said they use a "special" insurance--yeah...SURE!

Red flag #3, and I'm OUTTA there. Scumbags.

AVOID "US1 Camera" at all costs, IMHO. If you get what you ordered with no hassle or "pleasant" surprises, then consider yourself lucky.

I should have asked first but I read the ratings at Resellerratings.com and at pricegrabbers. We'll find out soon as its on its way.

I'll guarantee you that they're schill ratings. Even the ratings sites are aware that schill reviews are becoming more and more rampant, especially with automated IP masquarading now :-(

I don't trust them (rating sites) any more and will only go with forum/personal recommendations and my gut.

I hope I'm a lucky one. Maybe it's okay because I bought the camera and 2 lenses. I got free shipping with mine.

Camera came but the lens are on backorder, lots of good that's going to do me. I guess I'll have to cancel that part of the order and order it from somewhere else.

What bag do you use to get your camera into Aloha Stadium?

I have a lowepro backpack that I got at wolf camera in las vegas. I enter through the north end zone tunnel so have not run into any problems entering.

Hope you get your lens by the next game. I find that B&H and Adorama very safe to order from. Look for me at the next game if you want to borrow any of my extra lenses.

I put some of my pictures from last season of Ashley Lelie up. I can really see the difference in my pictures with my E10 and my D100.

I suppose they may have a legitimate excuse, but with their track record, the Red Alert must be going off.

I think many people start out thinking great customer service will be a cake walk, and then find out the hard way. Once they start sliding down hill, it just snowballs from there. Some may catch it in time and right the ship, but I don't hold my breath.

There is no free lunch, but at least you got your camera.

I'm not so bummed if I can get it cancelled because I'll just get the Sigma 70-200 HSM. I assume the autofocus will work on the D100. At the B&H site, it is not listed as one of the cameras that work with HSM (D1 series are) although it says that it is the same as AFS. Nowhere else had the 80-200 AFS. The Sigma is a whole lot cheaper.

I've seen some good stuff and some not so good stuff. Do you know anything about them?

I've only heard the same things. On eBay they have a pretty good record, so I would say if you know what you're getting they're probably OK. It's when things go wrong or you need customer service that separates the men (B&H) from the boys (most of the others, and ALL in the case of NYC).

With my D100, and it works GREAT! I got it for $600 flat from another authorized Nikon/Canon/Sigma dealer on eBay--new US model--"HotDigital.com."

Again, they're good if you know what you get and the transaction happens without incident. I don't think I want to find out how they handle anything other than sales.
