Can anyone help? I have a D40. I was taking pictures (as you do) and all of a sudden the shutter wouldn't open and I had an error message saying to press the shutter release button again to clear. So I did. It still kept coming up with the same error. so I switched off, took the battery out and waited a few minutes. Put the battery in and it worked for 2 more photos and then did the same. I then left the battery out overnight, checked the Nikon website and did a factory reset. It still doesn't work. It appears that the mirror has locked itself. I have checked the mirror lock function but the mirror won't move back. Any ideas?

thanks
Lisa

Hi, I dont have my camera here right now but I think you want to UNCHECK the mirror lock button. Worth a try.

It sounds like the flipping mirror mechanism is stock. How many shutter count on the camera?

I have gone into the menu again and the MIRROR LOCK option is not available with these settings. There's just -- next to it, so I can't choose to unlock or lock the mirror.

Can't find the shutter counter.

Came to use my Nikon D40 after several years stored safely.Recharged the battery put in memory card card and switched on only to get the error message "press release button again" Nothing happened. Tried this several times with the same result. Is there anything I can do to get the camera working again? I will try recharging the battery again although it seemed to recharge normally. I was able to open and view menus etc and try a reset.

Any help or advice would be welcome. (Am 86 now and a little slower at doing anything too complicated) Thanks for reading this
