i just bought this camera and started shooting ISO100; i owned a canon ixus75 for years and i find that fh100 picture (if zoomed slightly more than 100%) have a lot of noise more than ixus75. i tried to set sharpness to -2 (as suggested by someone in this forum) but result are, even if better than before, still worse compared to ixus75.

graininess is noticeable on darker portions of picture and i don't know actually how to solve this problem. it looks like a post processing issue, something related, maybe, to firmware..
any suggestion but sharpness set to -2?

thanks, bye

I have not noticed a noise problem at iso100. You need to compare the two camera same subject, same focal, same light ,same shutter time.

Why not read this DPR travelzoom comparison. It tells you exactly how the camera perform, how much noise to expect. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q210grouptravelzoom/page3.asp

Use one of the BS mode whenever possible or leave it in Auto. There is no setting that is good for everything. You can be indoor or out, turn 10 degrees, you need a completely different setting.

thanks stanbeck but this link is why i bought that camera. the problem i'm talking about is referred to camera post processing: blurry or out of focus are "pointillized" and grainy.
this is noticeable especially when you zoom more than 100%.
take a look to lower left corner of this picture

and this one

looks like a threshold filter is applied, everything is too sharp, there is no need to sharp out of focus areas.
look also to water and shadow zones here:

waves are almost not visible..

do you understand what i mean? images are just too much post processed for my tastes.. maybe a new firmware would be helpful since raw shooting is impossible due to excessive time

I see it now. Dark blurry corner oversharpened. I doubt there's cure for this or there wouldn't be DSLRs. 18 seconds for RAW isn't so bad. My 10 year old Kodak took that long between shots. Everyone was happy back then.

Water under the London bridge shot. I compared it with other cameras. They all about the same. I think my 2X Kodak gets better IQ than this 'superzoom' group.

I've not printed anything bigger than 4 X 6 since I retired my Nikon F2 ten years ago. IQ is not important for 4 X 6s. My only ***** with this camera is poor dynamic range. The blond in a white shirt under the sun shot. Its all bleached out.
Didn't have this problem with film.

(Maybe one of the BS mode doesn't sharpen? One of the portrait mode ?)

i don't know.. maybe a custom made firmware could solve everything. i put sharpness level at -2 but problem persists.
a simple jpg compression from raw would be perfect.. (for my tastes of course)
I think I understand what you mean. Please take a look at my thoughts posted at http://www.photo-forums.com/[email protected]@.eeb0db1/0

Having owned this camera for a month I think I can live with the processing "features" (and very soft corners). Also you might try shooting the high quality JPG.
perfectly agree with what stated on the link you posted.

i don't understand the meaning of your last sentence.. "Also you might try shooting the high quality JPG.".
explain me please mate

bye and thanks for answers
