somewhat OT - Could somebody explain goodbye threads?

I don't mind those posts so much from posters who have been around, but I saw one here earlier today saying goodbye, and it was his first ever post on DPReview!
I was tempted to reply, "No, not you! Don't leave, because we all will miss your contributions so much!" :p

Appreciate that! I was one of the folk they suckered I mean managed to snag! Not to bad, though. I teach all Advanced Placement and dual credit college classes to a super group of kids and work with a lot of really great people. I just wish I could figure out this "get the summer off" thing!

Since I don't have personal relationships with the members here, then why do you post goodbye to Olympus threads?
...
but how does telling me why you are leaving make a difference to me?
Maybe not you, but many of us post here daily/regularly, and are missed even if we go on vacation for a few weeks. Every once in a while you'll see a "where's so and so" message. You may not think of these people as "friends" but they are missed if not heard from.

Regarding the vacation issue, some people don't say they're going on vacation...there's a famous story that someone (with an alias) said they were going on vacation in the newsgroup they participate in, and when they came back they came home to an empty house.

Some of them are nervous for the steap they are about to take and need to light up the match themselves !

One of the gentlemen I work for keeps suggesting I get into teaching. I heard all the horror stories from my parents. I'd have to be in a situation like yours to avoid getting too frustrated.

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: I don't think they wanted me to say anything. It was just their way of having a bit of fun, the swines. Strange thing is they make such bloody good cameras.

If it's the latter, it's akin to stepping into the middle of the street, raising your fist at the sky, and yelling something akin to what Chuck Heston yelled at the end of POTA.
Well, it beats what he said at the end of Soylent Green. :)

I see that in other forums too. I added a post clarifying who the OP was aimed at. Not the online friends, but the whiners.

Sometimes it goes beyond online relationships. I'm on a fly fishing forum where there were two big gatherings (western and eastern) each year of people on the board. Many have met in small groups of two or more to fish with people that they otherwise would not have met. I met one of the nicest guys on the planet who lived more than a 1000 miles from me in Canada. Two of the members met online and are now married.

People are indeed strange :-)

I was tempted to reply to that one as well, but I wondered. Suppose that poster was a fanboy of another company and created a separate account, then came in the forum just to stir up people? In that message, the poster said he (she?) had been waiting for Oly to offer a full frame. Say WHAT? For someone who allegedly had been shooting with Oly for years and years, it just didn't ring true, logical, whatever, to me.

I don't mind some goodbye threads. They make me consider my own position. Others examine the angles for themselves and may point out something I've missed. If it's just a rant, that doesn't help me however.

My latest conclusion btw is that it's way early to make any conclusions. Photokina will give more info, one way or the other. I'm especially interested to see if other Oly DSLRs get any updating or any lenses get tweaked (though I'm not holding my breath). An actual test and user reviews will give more info, one way or the other. It's good to know at least that there will likely be some Oly DSLR available (new) in a few years.

Although I'm not planning to move to micro, I have to allow for the possibility that by the time I'm ready to buy another body, they'll be improved to the point that using my lenses on them will be a pleasure. That's one area where I don't see any people predicting an end soon.

For me it's just as reckless to buy an E-5 before it's been tested as it is to abandon Olympus without the information. Pros are a different situation. I know some need it or are anticipating taking a beating on reselling their equipment if the system goes belly up. For most of us hobbyists, though, it seems very premature to me.

That's my opinion of course and others can do what they want.

Someone stop me before I buy again, please!

Gotta agree with you on that. I'm not a pro (I wish), so this is not a rush in, life of death, bread and butter deal for me.

Since I don't have personal relationships with the members here, then why do you post goodbye to Olympus threads? Tell me why I should care enough about your reasons for going elsewhere to read your posts. Your reasons are personal. I may agree with some of them or disagree, but how does telling me why you are leaving make a difference to me?
Every morning guy would wake up, run to his computer, fire up DPR Oly forum and look you up. Smile would touch his lips when he saw you alive, in sound health and posting. TXforester is fine, he thought, and his day brightened. With spring in his step and spark in his eyes he would leave home and go about his business, periodically returning in his thoughts to the sweet moment of silent morning greeting. He lived the day in expectation of the moment when he finally gets back home, reviews threads and finds people he came to know and like, distant but oh so close...

And now you tell you don't care?? That hurts man, that really hurts... Must be enduring all the disadvantages of your photo equipment that made your heart so deaf... may he find peace in another forum, among kind gentle people whose souls are softened by adequate cameras...

to find out that camera purchases might be ego driven!

'your 35-100, sir'

Thank you.

So, you're saying I have a stalker? Least you could have done was make it a gal instead of a guy. :)

No... you HAD one... and now he is lost, lost forever... or she... who knows with some of these nicks... but as classic said, "not that there is anything wrong with that"
