Hi,

currently i have the choice to choose between canon 450D and Pentax k-x, which camera should i go for?

From what i found and collect from the internet, i feel that canon 450D is superior than pentax k-x in shooting portrait ... while pentax is better in terms of shooting night scene, low-light

this is just my thoughts that i came out from my own research these few days, please point me out if i am wrong =) which camera u guys think i should go for?

Check both in a store near you and get the one you like. No wrong choice, unless you're interested in video. The k-x does video, and the 450D doesn't. You'd have to go to the 500D or 550D in the Canon line to get that feature.

I'd prefer to use a Canon. The cameras are excellent and the variety and quality of available lenses is way beyond Pentax.

I did just see a press release though that announced the successor to the Pentax K-x. Called the Pentax K-R it supposedly has many additional features and even better low-light capability. Be sure to check that one out if you are still thinking Pentax.

yeah i love canon too.... but canon 450 doesnt have video while pentax does....
wondering how much does k-r cost, because i am on tight budget.

thanks for helping me guys :)

According to the article I saw the prices were as follows:

"The K-r will ship October 2010 packaged with an 18-55mm lens (27-82mm equivalent) for an estimated $850. It will also be sold body-only for $800, in a double-lens kit with an additional 50-200 telephoto zoom lens for $900, or in a double-lens kit with an additional 55-300 lens for $1,000."

First, you posted in the Canon forum so you're going to get more biased opinions towards the Canon.

The K-x is clearly the better camera with more features and much better ISO performance. Read the K-x review here on dpreview to see how much they praise it.

As for the 450D being better in portraits I'm not sure how you came up with that conclusion? What exactly is it better at?

Any DSLR can shoot excellent portraits with the correct lens and lighting. Both the Canon and Pentax kit lenses are pretty good so there's no issues there.

Whichever way you look at it the K-x is the better overall camera.

Unless you're planning on spending big dollars on Canon lenses in the future just go for the best bang body which is the K-x from the two.

I shoot with a Canon 550D and have given you an unbiased opinion between the two cameras.

Cheers

hmn... i saw some pictures of people shooting water droplets, the moment it splash into a surface, are those archievable with any DSLR? can pentax use canon's lens. or can canon use pentax's lens??

The prices came from a US website and are therefore US $.

i feel like i was in the same position as you about 6months ago.. but mine was w/ the 500d not the 450d...

i was about 90% sure i was going for the k-x but after doing about 2 months research i started to see alot of complaints about mirror slapping or something like that.. with the k-x.. .. even tho it probably was like a 5-8% problem of all pentax users.. (maybe even more now.. iunno ).. but hell that was enough for me to not get it...

plus..

canon has a lot more lenses to choose from and alot more people have it... so u can get alot more thing used... etc.. iunno

canon!

I had my research down to the 450D and the K-X... and I have sworn never, ever, ever, every to own another camera that runs on AA batteries, I don't care if Eneloops are wonderful etc. etc. I have said NO more AA powered cameras. The K-X did look great in many ways - why can't they give it a real-world modern power source?

AA's ended the K-X for me... I have a 450D.

I have a K-x and love it. I came from an S3-IS and when I wanted to move up to a DSLR, I wanted to choose Canon but in the end, the K-x won out. I think the one aspect over all others that won me over was it's low light high ISO abilities. I have been amazed at what I can get from this camera in that regard:

As for the lenses, I am sure that Canon has many more to chose from but with the K-x you get in body image stabalization and backwards compatability with all Pentax lenses back through the 1970's. Many great deals to be found on Ebay in this regard. As for mirror slap, have not had a problem with my camera and since I spend more of my time on the Pentax forum, I have noticed that the number of complaints have dwindled to nothing over the past couple of months. I think a majority of the reported problem was due to user error as the major cause that was given at that time for double images was that the operater was not allowing the shake reduction to kick in before snaping the shot and since that was brought up as a cause, and correction, not many new reports have come up. As for AA batteries, I don't see it as a problem maybe since my S3-IS took them and also becasue the number of shots per set is much higher than a proprietary Li battery. For the Pentax line with AA lithiums you can get close to 2000 shots but the P Li will get you a little under half that amount. Of course, not to mention, AA's are cheaper and much easier to find out there in a pinch.

I have been a Canon guy for many years and owned 6 different canon digicams before I moved over to Pentax so I still have a warm feeling for Canon but in this comparison between which camera to get I have to say the K-x is the winner.

You may want to look at lenses to make the final call. As someone stated above, Canon has more lenses. But ask yourself what you are looking for with lenses. Canon make zooms and lots of them. Pentax makes lots of great primes. Canon's lenses always seem to be big. Big and heavy. Pentax makes some very small and light lenses. So ask yourself what you use more and how big of a rig you want.

Oh, the 450 can't autofocus lenses that don't have their own autofocus built into the lens.

I'm always amuse when people respond to a useless thread. He indicates he is in no hurry to buy camera and is just posting to get a response. At any rate, he also posted the same thread over at pentax, as well as nikon forum.

Since Nikon thread was started yesterday, it is safe to assume he has already move on to Nikon D3000 vs K-X. See this:
