I got the Epson 785 EPX at Wal-Mart last night for $147 bucks! Only printed 2 black and whites so far, but wow, it prints way better than I thought it would...I have an 8x10 that I printed at Wal-Mart a while back that I thought looked good, but these are better so far...right now, I'm printing on the Epson Premium Glossy paper that came in the box, and its great!

Fiveholer,

I got one late last year, and I agree with you on the print quality. I have stayed with Epson inks and paper, and it hasn't disappointed me yet.

So far it has been trouble free for almost a year. It is definitely one of my better purchases. Have fun!

I got mine about 6 months ago and I've been loving it ever since. Before I bought it I did a lot of research and asked lot of questions....numerous folk told me that Epson printers tend to clog if you do use them regularly. I went 6 weeks without printing anything andwhen I finally did print again there was no clogging whatsoever! I really like the 785epx.

sometimes ya get what ya get and ya gotta be happy with what ya got........every photo can't be a masterpiece

Just a word of caution about paper.

The Epson photo series printers are picky about brands/types of paper.

Stay clear of HP and Kodak.

Office Depot (not Max) has a store brand photo paper that I really like a lot which is cheaper than the Epson Premium stuff and IMO looks almost as good.

Right now (until the 28th) it's on sale (buy 2 get 1 free).
The regular price is $11.99 for 25 sheets.

The stock number is 652021

Amen on that.. you'll end up with a horrid blotchy mess. I'm sure those papers work fine for HP and other printers, but the Epsons lay down A LOT of ink, and those papers simply can't handle it.

If you're going to be mounting under glass, lots of people like Epson's Heavyweight Matte.

My current personal favorite though is Epson's Professional Semi-Gloss. It's got a slightly textured surface like "real" photos that have a smudge/fingerprint proof finish. It seems to give me better/sharper detail than the regular photo paper.... I think there's a bit less "blooming" of ink drops.

Full disclosure: I'm using an 820, but it's essentially the same.

I am looking to buy a good photo quality printer also...what can I expect from this? are the pics sharp? Do they look as good as a color lab? Would I be able to print them and then frame them and people not be able to tell? This is what I am looking for in a printer.

Perhaps Inigo has a bit more experience, but I just bought the Epson 820 for $85 at my local Wal-Mart. I have done 2 color prints and everything the reviews said is accurate. Excellent color, no grain, using Epson glossy photo paper the pic looks as good as film images.

I used Epson and Canon papers mostly, but just tried Pictorico (made by Olympus I believe) and love it!!! I've printed out over 200 4x6 and several 8x10's and the quality is amazing. It's available at Best Buy.

I'm using an old Epson Stylus 600 printer with generic ink cartridges ($3 color/$2 B&W) and really cannot tell the difference between its output versus the newer Epson printers (I just jack up the saturation, contrast, and all colors by 15%) . BTW, I've used generic cartridges for almost 4 years in this same printer with no problems at all.

Another decent paper is Burlington Industries "Premium Photo". Good bang for the buck (30-4x6 sheets for $6). My Epson doesn't seem that picky about brands of paper

Can i really expect lab quality pics from a $85 printer? I've shyed away cause i thought it cost way more then that.

But they use the razor blade model..... the razors are cheap/free, and they make up their $$$ on the blades (ink carts). Don't mess with generic carts or refills -- not worth the effort and you'll get inferior results. Only exception would be some of the specialty places that printing "pros" use for pigmented inks, etc. but even they have their issues (like getting the right color profile for the printer driver).

I found some good prices on ink carts at this place. Only ordered from them once so far, but no problems:
