Hi,

currently i have the choice to choose between canon 450D and Pentax k-x, which camera should i go for?

From what i found and collect from the internet, i feel that canon 450D is superior than pentax k-x in shooting portrait ... while pentax is better in terms of shooting night scene, low-light

this is just my thoughts that i came out from my own research these few days, please point me out if i am wrong =) which camera u guys think i should go for?

Lenses are the ones that give the difference in shooting portraits. Not cameras.

The Kx is a great camera, and much better built than the 450D.
I'd point to the new K-r, but the K-x is a really capable camera.

i never use a DSLR before... i just wondering, can we use canon's lens on pentax? or pentax lens on canon camera??

does pentax produce their own lens or they use Tamron and sigma's lens only?

Whereas the K-x is better in terms of high ISO (which is measurable), that's just part of low light photography. For the rest the differences in shooting specific subject matter as mostly down the individual photographer or possibly the lens used. Esp for shooting portrait I would assume that much. You may find that some argue that Pentax has more natural skin tones, but again that depends on the JPG settings you configure in the camera or apply to your post processing.

If you consider Pentax, you might wait a short while and opt for the K-r that was announced today.

hmn, K-r seems to be quite good as well, but still K-x should be slightly cheaper, i can get it for $700 aussie dollars and it will be in pink =) i am a 21-year old girl so the color of the camera does take into consideration ...

Others can point out the use of Canon lenses on Pentax and viceversa... In general if you can, you lose autofocus, so you're usually "stuck" with each brand's lenses, which is the second reason why people will tell you to choose lenses first, camera second. The first reason being which focal length you use most; if you're not sure you can either go with the standard kit zooms (18-55) to experiment or try a fixed focal length (called a prime) lens; Pentax just released the 35mm 2.4 which might be very good and not very expensive, and gives you an approximate "human eyes" view.

Pentax does make their own lenses and they have a good reputation. In addition other brands such as Sigma and Tamron produce lenses for each brand, including Canon, Nikon and Pentax.

I'm a happy Canon user but the Pentax K-x seems to offer a lot of bang for the buck...

I suggest you include Canon T2i if you consider the newly announced K-r.

Both are $799.

Canon offers a full frame upgrade path, Pentax does not.

Canon makes products to allow a photograher to grow and build their system.

While Pentax offers endless rumors of products that never materialize.

10 years, no full frame Pentax exists yet even though they annouced it as coming soon.
10 years to me is not "soon".

Pentax is King of colored plastic cameras, you just need to buy from Japan to get this selection of color if this matters the most to you? The new all plastic lens is available in numerous colors, again only in Japan. I suspect in the coming years Pentax will retreat from the world and only do business in Japan. Which is odd as nothing they make comes from Japan thesedays.

When asked, would I choose Pentax again?

After 8 years I can safely say "No"

I wish I could get a do over and have skipped Pentax entirely.

If you want it pink, then get the new DA-L 35/2.4 lens as well. It will be available in pink too... ;-) Though that might be for Japan only:

35mm is a very nice standard fixed focal length. This means no zoom, just one field-of-view. This may sound limiting, but trying to photograph all possible subjects with one focal length is actually one of the best ways to learn to look for a good photographic angle and learn composition.

True, Pentax currently don't have a "full frame" thingie. They have a much more expensive (and better, if we're talking about image quality) medium format solution - the 645D. Out of the reach for most of us...

How many photographers would outgrow Pentax? If we'll absolutely need a "full frame" thingie, why is the "FF" market share so small?

That's a lie .

Don't tell me, you chose Pentax based on that MZ-S prototype...

Spreading FUD, eh? Have you trained hard, for this Photokina edition?

And probably we'll have to hear about this over and over again, so no one else would repeat your "mistake"...

I had both and now gave both to my sister but I some times still borrow my Kx from her but I never even bother to think using the 450D.

I hated the 450D and all other rebels , they are built cheaply and they dont have inbody IS and their high ISO is not as good as the Kx.

And for this kind of a compact body , IMO, Pentax lens line fit better(with these excellent limited primes) than that of Canon.

For me now , for paid work or portait landscape ,etc , I use Nikon but anything else hiking , trecking or street work , I do use my Kx and K7.

wow thanks a lot ^^ they are so cute... just wondering if Aussie will stock in those lens... perhaps i need to buy it from ebay, but anyway.

i think the K-x is pretty expensive for me as a beginner, maybe i will not consider to upgrade it to K-r , not too convinced that why i should get k-r... i learn stuff pretty slow so i might not outgrow it anytime soon T.T haha~

i like to take portrait and wildlife.... and maybe video, guess K-x is better in terms of overall performance as canon 450 doesnt have video....

Of course, that's the "MZ-D". Or, MZ-S-based DSLR prototype.

I have the K-x, and I find it's AF, with the DA 55-300 lens, fast enough to keep up with outside sports, e.g., my nine-year-old playing soccer.

Since you mention sports and wildlife... If you decide to get the K-x (and I think that's the best bang for the buck right now), I'd recommend getting the K-X with the two-lens kit, the 18-55 and the 55-300 lens.

Right now, B&H is selling this kit for an amazing $628 USD:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/651673-REG/Pentax_15801_K_x_Digital_SLR_with.html

(You have to add it to your cart to see the price.)

Note : B&H is closed right now for Rosh Hashanah, so you won't be ab;e to order (well, you can order, but your order won't be processed) until tomorrow (Saturday).

Also, B&H is shipping this free in the U.S., but I don't know what if any shipping charges there might be to Australia.

But, $628 for that camera, plus those two lenses, is pretty much an unbeatable deal.

HTH,

Greg

Well, I'm sure you must be right but can you share with us the details of this announcement? I must have missed it somehow.

We're in agreement on that, at least. I wish you had too.

wow that s a great deal!!!

but the thing is that i am in Australia, everything is so far away from australia T.T i think i am stuck with the price in Aussie .... if i order it, Aussie immi might tax me, +10% tax +mailing cost, i think i will still end up getting the same price as Aussie camera shop :S

Pentax is not exactly the choice number one for wildlife or fast moving object shooting (unless the SAFOX IX introduced in K-r improves things dramatically). Canon offers far better lens selection for this type of photography. Small fixed focal length lenses are Pentax speciality.

so u recommend canon 450D in this case? or is there any brand that u think is great for wildlife and fast moving object? like nikon.... olympus ? thanks for helping me :D

I am a Canon XSi owner - I love this little camera - but if I we're in the market today, I buy the Pentax K-x over XSi for these 4 reasons
  • Pentax has bigger Optical Viewfinder, joy to use
  • Pentax has cleaner, less noisy iso1600
  • Pentax has iso 3200, iso6400 that is missing from Canon XSi
  • Pentax has build in Body stabilization
My biggest gripe against my lovely XSi is the lack of iso3200 and above. Iso1600 is very limiting: it makes using slower aperture lens (like f/5.6 superzoom) difficult for indoor setting. For example, even with fast lens of f/2.8 @iso1600, my shutter speed is barely adequate at 1/6 - 1/10s. Having iso3200 would double my shutter-speed to 1/12 - 1/20s and increase my keeper rate in low light situation.

However, I don't like the over-inflated pentax lens price lately. Pentax lens used to be a bargain, not any more. Pentax 50mm f/1.4 use to be a bargain around $245, now its almost double to $500.

Once I add up all the cost of buying the pentax lens.....I give up and stay with canons.

Hoya/Pentax is following the great Razor/Shaver strategy: sell razor cheaply but charge a high premium on replacement blades

The Kx is a great camera, and much better built than the 450D.

Canon and Nikon (respectively) rule this type of photography due to their lens selection and fast autofocus systems (like I said, the AF module in the K-r might be an improvement and Pentax just might come up with more long tele lenses). Olympus offers great lenses for its 4/3 system, but the whole future of that system is a bit questionable.

I'd recommend that you studied what lenses Canon, Nikon and Pentax offer for wildlife and sport photography and asked yourself what you are willing to pay... (and carry with you.)
