I am looking for an external monitor for a Mac Pro that I'm going to buy.

I know there are many options out there but was wondering what would be good value for money at a price point between $1000 and $1500.

I'm looking for a 24" screen that would be an upgrade from my Dell 24WFP that I've had for 3-4 years now.

Many thanks

Hi Mark

As a long time Apple user - over 20 years - I've always like their kit apart from the monitors. And as someone who prints professionally for other photographers and relies on their monitors to earn a living I'll give you my honest opinion.

I've tried and tested many screens over the years both for clients and myself and the one I've stuck with for the past 5 years have been from Eizo.

My current screen of choice is the CG241W which is hooked up to my MacPro running Eizo's ColorNavigator software and calibrated with an EyeOne Pro. This is a superb combination, really flexible and a pleasure to work with. The only downside to it is the viewing angle is not that great but that doesn't really bother me as I'm usually the only person looking at it!

The new CG243W has replaced the 241 and has some improvements on it but I've not had a chance to test this out yet. Either would make an excellent choice for your needs. Another plus point for the Eizos is their excellent support and warranty. Most of the ColorEdge screens now come with a five-year warranty so long as they're used within certain parameters which are quite acceptable.
Hope this helps!
PS I have no financial or other interest in Eizo - just a happy customer!

The NEC PA241W is a wonderful monitor that is well-regarded and falls into your price range.

I'd stay away from the HP LP2475W, even though it has good specs, simply because it has an extremely annoying humming noise. I'm going to sell mine and would like to know of a good replacement. Apple's glossy screen just doesn't work for me. I had considered an Eizo previously and probably should have gone for it.

I've had an hp lp2475 for two years and love it. Never heard any humming, and it's in a quiet room. Color space, brightness uniformity across the display, and overall monitor characteristics are excellent, price is very good, and the warranty is very good. The only issue I've had with this unit is that upon waking up, it takes a minute or so to stabilize. The Apple displays I have wake up instantly and I always have to wait that minute for the lp2475 to finally sync with the Mac.

There is one other niggling issue: 4 of the 6 USB ports, as well as all of the video ports, are on the bottom of the display and they're a major pain to get to without tipping the display on end. Fortunately there are 2 readily accessible ports on the left side, and you don't need to muck around with the video connections very often.

I don't have any problem recommending this display for Mac folks, and in fact I've read a number of owners' comments who are pleased with them.

My monitor definitely has a humming sound and I have read about similar experiences on other forums. I even tried an adjustment that was recommended to eliminate the hum but no dice.

As I believe you mentioned in another part of your post, the monitor does take a few minutes to warm up during which, at least in my case, it has a magenta cast. Glad your monitor is working okay!
