hi there,

I'm a newbie into photography and I'm wonder which is a better buy for me betw the above two model.... I understand there's many kind soul here who is willing to share their view... pls help..

Btw, for a start, I will prefer a model which is able to perform faster capturing speed... maybe is my lack of knowledge and skill, but it seem betw the two.. Nikon D90 still has a faster shutter capturing.. well do correct me if i'm wrong..

They are different cameras in more than one way. 550D is entry-level, D90 prosumer.
550d: more MP, lighter and better video

D90: pentaprism, flash commander, dedicated buttons, heavier. In fact, if you like Canon, you have to compare it to the 50D.

You have to go to a shop and see how they feel/handle to make an informed decision.

hmm... thank for the reply..

well, I actually went down to the shop and try both models. D90 give me a more solid hold as compare to 550D. But I'm also aware that 550D is higher in pixels with more features to play around for a beginner. Which is why i'm at a dilemma.. :p

Btw, what is MP??

well, the thing is both models is pretty much the same cost to me. I intend to start with one for at least 3-4yrs before i consider spending more on this. Afterall, I'm taking picture as a hobby

For a beginner, in you opinion, what should i be looking for in this two models??

MP = MegaPixels. Which features are you talking about??

I can't give an unbiased opinion. I already gave you the differences. Just take the one you like best to handle if they don't matter to you. Taking pics is not about MP :
In order of importance:
1) The photographers' eye
2) tech know-how and skill
3) The lens
4) The camera

In short: if you like doing panos and videos, the 550D. If you like sports or studio-work: get the D90 for more accurate AF en flashsystem.

Don't underestimate the learning-curve. It will take some time before you get better pics with a dslr than a compact ;-)

As a beginner, you have to understand that more MP (megapixels) doesn't make the 550D better than the D90. There are other things like IQ (image quality), and high ISO performance that also determine which is best.

Being a prosumer model, the D90 has more buttons on the outside. This means you spend less time going into the menus to make simple changes. To me, that's important.

The D90 has best in class high ISO performance. This means less noise in low light.

It may be right at 2 years on the market, but no one has beaten it yet. Looks like the first one to beat it will be its replacement which is due out any time now. When its replacement hits the market, the price of the D90 may or may not drop.

The 550D is a great camera too, but it is not in the same class as the D90. It is newer, so it has better video, but it is an entry level camera. If you want something to compare it to, then compare it with the Nikon D3100 or D5000.

Thanks guy!!

that's alot of help. At least i'm getting somewhere now. Hmm... D90 will sound like a better choice for my situation now... I mean I don't really do many video shoot, but I do like to capture fast moving action and play around the picture effect under different lighting/ISO setting.

One thing that come across my mind after reading you guys feedback... 550D has ISO from 100-6400. isn't that better??

I do admit, most of 550D required me to search ard the menu... but given practice, will it still compromise my capturing moment??

i had a similar dilemma when i was choosing between the 550D and the 50D, entry level with video and other features vs Prosumer with faster frame rate and more comfortable feel. at the end is still choose the 50D because i like the faster fps and more solid feel, features between the two models aren't really much in terms of picture quality but i guess one has a feature that the other one dont have.

at first i was leaning towards the 550D because of the HD video but when i went to the shop to try both cameras the 550D was just like my 400D. i felt that the 50D is much faster (but thats just me). i have a friend with a D90 and i manage to borrow it for a couple of minutes to try it and its very similar to the 50D in terms of performance the built.

I would suggest to go for the D90 but either cameras will do if this is your first DSLR (IMO), but like anybody said: "go to the shop and try both cameras".

Obviously, if speed is required, dedicated buttons perform better than going through a menu. But the occasions are not THAT frequent unless you're a sports-shooter/wedding-photographer or so. More important I feel is the bigger brighter Viewfinder (pentaprism) which will enable you to frame better and is just nicer to look through. Try them both and see the difference.

D90 can also go from 100-6400.

If price is no issue, the D90 is better. Its a higher end model. Ignore the number of pixels, 12 mp is plenty and more is not going to make your photos look better.

Currently, the Canon 50d is the competition for the D90.

If you do not wish to spend too much on lens(tele), high MP will help you to save money. In good lighting, hi MP give you better detail. Hi MP still able to give you good IQ for hi ISO if you reduce to smaller size. Another option, 60D coming soon. Better AF then D90 and 550D. D90 has good AF, but not good enough for action. IMO.
--easy..get the N 7000 next mo.

Wait for that announcement before deciding.

If Rumors hold true (and Nikon Rumors has been pretty spot on), it wil likely be an amazing camera for the price. Read about it here: http://nikonrumors.com/2010/09/06/recap-3.aspx
There will likely be an announcement. This is not the same as actually being able to buy one.

There are always announcements of new cameras, and then, they appear in a month, sometimes 6. But, before they are readily available in most stores, it will be a wait.

If you don't mind waiting a few months until they appear in your stores, it might be available at a higher price, of course. The new model and the just announced Canon D60 will go head to head at the same price point. so, if you are willing to wait, look at both and hope you can get one before Christmas.

Generally, I would expect the Nikon camera to appear more quickly since they are likely in full production right now. Canon seems to always be slower.
