My F300EXR debut shots (many)

A windy day may account for some of the smearing at the top of the trees, but not for the smearing of the bottom of the tree trunk in the first of 2 photos I've shown.
Are you pertaining to this? Yes I see the softness in the bottom branch but I don't think that it is smeared. Most likely due to corner softness which is a problem with most WA lens design.

Nice catch though and it is something to watch out for.

...

Yes, that is what I was referring to. I didn't see corner softness in other pictures.

I'm no expert in pixel peeping, but would make the observation that other parts of that tree container have better detail resolution. Why?

It may be that the tree has been fed with murky water hundreds of times and what we see is a continual smoothing of part of the surface and base of the tree.

We need to see more before drawing a conclusion from that particular pic that smearing is worse than its predecessors.

The other pic you mentioned(canal fishing) doesn't surprise me - dusk, ISO800 and fine dark detail in the distance.

I agree!
Quality seems really on par with my beloved F70 and that's excellent news!

I've seen yesterday a youtube concert video shot with F300EXR and the sound quality is really improved, the IS is rock steady and works during video capture.

WA performance seem good too, and way better thab F70 as regards purple fringing (I use my F70 from 50mm on). ISO800 night shots have absolutely the F70 feel.
I'm bought!

... I thought there were some quite good images in your first parts (1 - 4), but this series is a lot better.

They seem so much more detailed and colourful. My own opinion, of course.

Love the shot of the guy on the motorbike, looking behind. Police chasing him ?

Cheers.

I guess I photographed a spirit.

Yes. with the F300EXR... even the supernatural can be EXR-ed.... provided u use the right DR...!

Took my F300EXR to Qianmen to test out the night street shots.
Mostly in P Mode -1/3 exp, DR200%, ISO Auto 400.
Most of the shots are resized and USM 50%, except 'The zoomed Shoe Shot',
Look out for Spot/Multi metering if you see double takes on a shot.

The F300EXR which surprises me by reacting differently to the F200EXR. When I took the first shot posted and I metered it to the brightest spot under 'Multi-Metering', the camera refuses to do so, thus resulting in blown highlights. Usually with the F200EXR, I can easily nail that one. Now, I have to resort to 'Spot-Metering' but then that only gets half the job done.

I realised that much earlier during my first few shots, when, I pointed it to a setting sun, and the shot still come up too bright. I guess this camera doesn't shoot silhouettes well, unless u set it to Spot.

Regards,
Tony

Ha, useful to know. I was thinking of liquid spirits. Reminds of the old joke 'does a ghost train stop at manifest-station'?

Thanks for your samples part 6. Looks pretty good to me for a small sensor.
What do you think of the LCD?

Nick

Guys, ya gotta see the zoomed shoe shot in full.
Click it twice.

It's unbelievably sharp for a fully optical-zoomed shot... like looking through a microscope.

The LCD is big bright and pretty.
I like it, no complaints.

Once when I was shooting that blue neon sign of the restaurant (see below), I was surprised to see all these blue light awashed on the ground. It was on the LCD and it was also captured on the shot. The thing is, I couldn't see it on the naked eye!

What I probably, the sensor is probably acting as a medium for us to see beyond our normal optical range. Or maybe the WB is playing tricks on me.

Just a question: didn't you use iso800 o 1600 because you find them too noisy? I'm curious to see some of these pics at least at iso800.

P.S. are you shooting in M size, correct?

Mario

Hi mario,

IMO, only the F30 nails it in ISO1600. (I know I know... aggressive NR, painting like textures... there...I said it before the F30 haters can jump in).

Unless the jpeg engine is really aggressive, why shoot in ISO 1600? Even controlled samples in good light shows so much noise at 800 and above.

Back to your question, I have not used the SN or the DR mode yet... probably never will. I have a sample for ISO 1600 shown below and that's about it.
ISO 3200 still sux.

For lowlight shots, in terms of ease capturing moving subjects at night with ease and minimum blur
F30> F200> F300.

F300 is a lot of work... really.

1/ F300 EXR shot

2/ F200EXR shot

3/F30 Zoom

4/ F30 Zoom

PS: Yes, M mode only.

Thanks for the effort again, Conan.

@1/105s Portrait position, both the lens and IS are really impressive, The IS is definetly better than F200 at tele end.

As for IQ vs F200exr, Hugo is properly right, about 1 stop behind. ISO1600 and or above not very useful.

Personally, I preferred letting the camera selecting the DR for me, so that I can concentrate in composition and holding camera steady. Seldom set DR myself.

One of few manual DR pics (DR800) with my F200 captured on a tram.

If you have the time, when you shot contrast night shots, could try taking some comparsion shots with auto DR?

Thanks and I hope you enjoy using your new toy.

Yeah, I'm amazed about the lens performance. The baskets full zoom shot is outstanding!

But I have one thought about your shots: You seem to hate high ISO and stick to ISO400 and below. This is the reason why some shots seem not detailed. I don't think it's NR, this is mild sharpness. When you get it steady, detail in low light at ISO400 is gorgeous. ISO800 is usable, don't fear it, it's better than getting that mild appearance.

Two more questions: are you using Program mode in L or M size? It doesn't seem consistent in your shootout.

And what do you think about the video mode? Please try it and give us your impressions about sharpness, focus and sound. It seems as if Fuji has finally produced a better sound (even if mono) based on a concert video posted on Youtube.

Thanks a lot for the effort.

Awesome Tony, your shots are getting better and better which means you're getting the hang of it pretty quick. Those low light shots are sharp and yes that shoe shot is impressive. I was impressed of another site's sample of a day shot in good light (full zoom at 100% crop) but to see some sharp, crisp night shots is wonderful.

Can't wait to give it a spin here in Vegas.

Hi Altruisto,

Yes, the ISO 1600 has punchy colours, but I'll only use it in difficult situations.

My shots are 99% in M mode. I'm running out of space in my laptop... and I don't have a 46 inch TV yet...haha...

As for the video, well, I need to check it out too.

Regard,
Tony

Thank you. They are all handheld too.
It's very good for indoor lighted shots... even zoomed ones.
I'm beginning to believe the tele shots are better than the wide shots.

My percentage of wide shots have gone down dramatically from > 75% to 50%.

Even to zoom a little when I don't need to is good to reduce the corner softness and distortions.

Nice to know that they are all handheld. You mentioned that it is a lot of work, more than the F30 in low light, can you give me more details on this?

I know what you mean about soft corners and distortions and unfortunately WA is quite the norm nowadays. I still much prefer a very sharp 36mm like the F30 over the super WA now. It would be nice if they make it capable to program a certain focal range upon turn on so it won't be a problem.

The distortion here is a bit bothersome. I feel drunk just by looking at it LoL.
