Hi,

I am thinking of getting a remote for my 500D. I have checked out some on amazon, and they apparently cost around €12.00 upwards. I have checked some reviews of some of these cheaper ones, and some of the reviews are quite good.

Yesterday I spoke to my local camera shop, and was told that I would need to spend around €99.00 to get a good transmitter one. I mentioned to the shop about the cheaper ones on amazon, and was told that these don't do the job properly.

I am fully aware that you get what you pay for, but there is a huge difference between €12 and €99.

I am a beginner. i do not want to spend a huge amount of money, but at the same time there is no point in buying something cheap if it doesn't do the job.

Are the cheaper ones any good or should I do as the camera shop suggested and pay the €99 for what they say is the proper one?
I would greatly appreciate any advice and help you can give me.
Thanks and good luck,
Tony

Tony,

Not sure what you're looking at and not sure which remote they're recommending to you, or whether you want a wireless one, but I've used this one with my 500D.

I also have the RC1, (which I think has been discontinued now.)

Many of the 3rd party inexpensive models work well with the Canon cameras so I don't think you have to spend that much money for a remote. I'm sure others will tell you what they've used successfully.

there is no need to post in 2 forums.

keep it to one.
So what? Mistakes are made. If we all got as picky as you, we could find reasons to pick on you too.

Why address your message to me?

Why post at all if you don't have an answer to the OP's question?

Thanks to everyone for your advice. I'm checking things out and trying to make a decision.

thgood,

I've checked out the R6 on Amazon and and on ebay and I am just wondering is the one you purchased on ebay the same as the one on amazon ? The reason I ask is because the one on amazon sounds great, and I am just wondering is the cheaper one on ebay perhaps a " knockoff " of the amazon one, and as a result may not be as good as the one on amazon - what do you think ? ( however i must admit it is totally impossible to g wrong for $4.00 ) :+)

Thanks again to everyone for your advice and help I really appreciate it.

Take care and good luck,

Tony :+)

Thanks again for all

It's a knock off. Speaking as an electrical engineer I can say that transmitting IR codes is a very simple affair. I did however lie about the price... it was $2.38 including shipping!

Has not arrived yet, ebay seller rating is ok with other people purchasing it. I have bought other stuff from Hong Kong and never been burned.

Click on "threaded view" and you will see that your message replied to mine. That happens when you hit the wrong "reply" button when you're in flat view, which I'm sure is exactly what you did.

It's really no big deal just as the OP posting in two forums was no big deal. I just had to show you that we can all be picky but being picky isn't worth it.

I use the both of the same remotes, both work fine for me. The only thing I wish the RC1 did was to allow me to shoot faster. I dont like being forced to do the 2 seconds delay for remote shot. But I know thats the camera and not the remote doing it.

When I want faster shooting I just switch to the RS60.

I just bought a Canon RC-6 remote for my T2i/550D from a reputable camera store here in Vancouver, BC Canada for $30.00/22 Euros. I could mail it to you for about $3.00.

Well, the cheaper ones won't do as good a job for his bank account, anyhow.
