My 1Gb Microdrive.

In a previuos post I said 'there reliable enough for NASA.......'

(This one has just died. No help required - I have supported computers for 17 years and have listened to my share of harddrives, etc.).

I just wanted to share my grief for my little friend who has sadly left us.

Here's some of 'his' earlier work

My sympathies ...
you know, after an appropriate period of mourning ( to be
determined by you and your wallet ) , do think about adopting
another one... or perhaps the more rugged 1 Gig CF ....

Now, a moment of silence....

Yes I have to have another large capacity drive, but I now feel less comfortable with the mechanical ones as opposed to the solid state.
I did love 'it' tho'.

I admire your photos Melanie and since 1998 I retook up photography because digital is making me learn. My greatest needs now are better composition advice and the time and patience to master Photoshop.

Thanks for the silence.

Keep up the good work.

Regards

Richard (emotional and almost distraught)

Alas, unlike a click-o-death Zip disk it is too small to recycle as a coaster. Save it until you get a pair and you can make a set of cuff links.

Curious if you left the MD in the camera and used the USB for transfering files, or removed it repeatedly and used a USB CF reader for transfer. One reason I've opted not to use the IBM drive is my use of the USB reader. I figured the repeated manipulation would increase the chance of failures.

Camera was too slow at transfer and I found a trusty Swift Synchro card reader (my 2nd and each of my neighbours have one) for £20 at Jessops ex demo. I loved it. Me and me Microdrive had regular intercourse. The last time being this morning.
Some maybe important to someone facts;
1.I had wiped it earlier today but left it in the card reader.

2.I grabbed the camera to take some pictures of Rossi and Button (2 of our cats wrestling). The camera came up 'NO CARD'.
3.I turned it off.

4.Ran upstairs with camera in one hand and ejected the microdive and then pulled it out of its PCIMCA?? (i'm in morning...ok) with the other by manipulating it between the fingers of one hand when normaly I would use both the to remove it.
5.Its dead.

Other factors..
Well used ... maybe every 5 days (average)

Camera dropped once 3 weeks ago but lots of photos taken since and downloaded, etc.
Well cared for.

Travels in Lowenpro padded camera bag inside rucksack on the back of my Cagiva Raptor. Therefore it has not been exposed to a strain of greater than 135! mph.

Well the first laptop I ever took on a motorbike was an Amstrad 640K thing...
and guess what...........not reliable.

... having a wake for me microdrive drinking a little ABSYNTH (85%)...%..

I hope I have given the coroner as accurate description as possible to the circumstances that caused the untimely demise of my dear friend..

..LOL.

..CRY.

Somewhere, a tiny violin plays "My Heat Bleeds for You, You Poor 'Relying On A Tiny Spinning Disk' Fool". Go solid-state, young man, go solid-state.

I think it could be used as a coaster if you do shots or drink Cuban coffee.

It would probably skip well on the ol' pond.

Personally, I think the most appropriate thing to do would be to glue on some fuzzies and a string, tie it to a doorknob, and, wah-lah, you have turned it into a cat toy.

Now I am scared. I just had the hard drive on my Dell computer, only six months old, fail on me. I got a microdrive, thinking what are they all on about?, I've been using computers since 5.25 inch dual floppy disc drive, and never had or knew anyone with a hard drive problem. I absolutely never take my microdrive out of the camera and hearing Richard's experience it will stay in always. Mine never takes that long to download even when I've got a couple of hundred of pics - I just go away and have a beer, and hey presto, when I get back they're done.

View my pics at:

I hope you get sorted with a new card Richard - now they are getting larger it seems the best way to go.

You are not alone in your sorrow. Today my I-O Data 256 MB reported 50 corrupted files for the second time in a row. So its time to say good by to her too. This is the second card that dies on me. The first one being Lexar.

Good bye good old girl.......hope you meet Richard's Microstunt in card's heaven......

I am deeply sorry for you loss......

I got my first microdrive by mail today, you think it may be an reincarnation of yours?

I'm planning on using my MD with a PCMCIA adapter to transfer images so Im getting a little nervous here.....

Cheers
