If FT was to end, where would you go?

Obviously, we all hope that FT will continue, but if development does end; which other system do you think you'll end up with?

I have been looking around at Sony, Canon and Nikon, and am completely overwhelmed by the quantity of lenses. I have no idea where to start? I sure hope FT is here to stay for a while.

Good Bye, ô Cruel World. Benedictine Monastery, here I come.

E-1 (sold 2009); E-520 (since December 2008, beuark!) E-410 (since June 2007) E-500 (2006- lost 2007); zuiki 14-54 (sold 2009); zuiko 14-42 (excellent, sold 2009); zuiko 14-45; zuiko 40-150Mk1 (excellent); zuiko 40-150 Mk2 (sold); zuiko 50 f2 macro (sold 2009, hoping for SWD version); Zuiko 70-300 (so-so); flash FL-36 (so-so)

I hope to be able to get a E-620 + grip for not more than $700 in 2010.

It would Canon or Nikon. As I have had Nikon film cameras in the past I maybe would be swayed to them. Mind you, the Canon 5D Mk 2 looks very nice.
Whatever marque, it would have to be full frame.

If I wasn't with Olympus right now, I would have a D90.

But, the D90 is lacking so much I love about the E620/E30. To name one is the flippy screen, I love it and rely on it so much now. It's a nice feature to have.

By the time I need to replace my Olympus stuff (still expecting several years out of it though), then hopefully Nikon have released some better flippy screen alternatives :)

But I'm here to stay for a while, weather Olympus gives up or not.

Scott.

A few weeks ago I'd answer Nikon. Today, it's rather: will keep shooting with my current Oly as long as possible, observing all the developments with new technologies and having Sony as serious contender in mind. In a few years make a decision as things clear up with various new offerings so I can decide between DSLR-mirrorless-SLT-WETCUW (whatever else they come up with).

The idea of selling Oly equipment as early as possible to capture greater residual value may not pan out too well as early adoption of immature technologies carries its own risks and may introduce its own unneeded spending down the road - by means of changing to latest models as first ones become obsolete quickly in rapidly developing field, or by means of erroneous judgment between those new technologies.

There is nowhere for me to go, I couldn't replace the 12-60mm and 50-200mm in terms of size, weathersealing, price and weight. I don't want bigger more expensive lenses that don't equal these two. I'd buy up a few used bodies and stick with what I have, high ISO doesn't really concern me. I can also adapt my lenses onto m4/3's bodies. I'm not worried, Olympus have stated they will continue to support 4/3's so I have no reason to believe otherwise.

But that is just a matter of subjective taste, not really in-depth research.

I come across Nikon and Canon cameras occasionally, and I like the look and feel of the (high end) Nikons better. (In entry level DSLRs, I feel that no other company offers cameras that feel as solid as Olympus). I've handled D300, D700, D3 and D2 and was not unpleased. (OTOH, I've never handled any high-end Canons). I think Nikon specifications are most in line with what I do and like doing.

But the market is evolving.

Sony has nice things up its sleeve (even if it does not have the heritage (apart from the Minolta remains).

And I am also quite charmed by some things that Pentax does well, so ultimately it might have to be Pentax (there you have it : I just wanna be a minority !)

postscript:

All of this is of course hypothetical. I am so well equipped in Oly stuff, that I would probably continue using it all until it literally fell apart, even after the hypothetical discontinuation of the system. I see this more as a question like:

"What would you do if you woke up one morning and all Olympus camera equipment had vanished from the earth?' .

I would stay with FT for a couple more years. There would definitely be a good used market for FT. Afterwards, I'd buy whatever interests me.

i'm a dual system user anyway, plus i still shoot film quite often, so if Olympus decide to follow the path of the great british car industry, i'd be sad but it really wouldn't affect me.

Mandolin, haha, nope sorry! That, my friend, is a Banjo :)?

if FT were to end (don't know exactly how that transition would take place), I'd shoot with my other system - which in this case happens to be Nikon. I'd continue to shoot with my current FT gear until it all fails. Heck, I'm still using the most awesome E-1 with a Leica lens and the IQ from that combo still bests many a contemporary combo out there.

All of the brands have some pretty exciting and competent stuff and you can easily get caught up in those worlds. I get just as excited with new Nikon releases as I do with Olympus offerings. I could just as easily embrace Canon - but I'm not going to spread myself thin again. I've just recently wound up selling off 56 of my 74 camera collection and it feels wonderful. The bad side effect of all of this is how much camera gear loses value - regardless of mint condition or not.

Remember, these are only cameras - not a "way of life," yet some bound their mindset and psyche into a particular brand name and philosophy. If FT goes - so be it - we have other choices. I'm sure that Canon and Nikon will continue to flourish. I think it's called "choice" and hopefully a free market system (what's left of it, anyway).

I still have a big lot of nikon lenses, so I probably still buy a Nikon 300 I guess, but first I wait what's coming.

Supposing 4/3 poofs, I would keep using my Oly gear until my daughter hits grade 7, and then give her an E-3, 14-54, 50-200, 50f2, and FL50r flash and say "go nuts!"

By then, I would have saved enough cash to get either a Nikon or Canon set up with sealed HG quality glass, and a sealed body. Weather sealing is a deal breaker for me - whatever camera I get, it has to keep dust and moisture out.

Supposing 4/3 does not poof, then I will get the E-3 replacement, a 150mm f2, and 2x tc, and call it a day.

Either way, the saving starts now :)

I'd get the E620 as an upgrade for my E510 and enjoy my 12-60 and 50-200 for at least 5 more years. I have invested quite some money in those 2 lenses. Only if I could get some good return for them (which I doubt if 43 is discontinued) would I consider switching now. After 5 years, who knows?

I wish Olympus would release a 620 replacement with video. Between that and my 12-60 I would be set for a long time. My 510 is getting so old :(

I'm in the same boat as you. I have an e-510, 12-60, 50, 35 and 70-300.

I recentely invested in 12-60 so I plan to still use an Oly DSLR for a couple of years to come.

Maybe later in life I'll invest in a PEN E-P2-ish camera to have a more compact system.
Otherwise I'm waiting for an e-530 or e-630 with video.

I'm a dual-system (Oly and Canon) guy myself. I'd still use the Oly system as a compact field system, with the Canon 5D MkII still being used as the high-quality studio camera. I've got the Oly 14-54, the 12-60, the 7-14 and the 50-200 along with the 1.4X TC, and they're hard to beat for reach and portability.

But if Oly doesn't announce any new FourThirds stuff at Photokina or before (and today's announcements of nothing but mFT stuff is ominous to me), then new investment in that system is done. I'll consider selling it only to acquire specific lenses in Canon.

If oly dissapoints me with 43s then im sure i won't even think about m43, no matter how tiny it is.
