Difference between cable release and remote control

The cable release allows me to trip the shutter easily on long exposures (fireworks, night, etc,) without having to reach around the camera with a free hand holding the remote. I used to use the remote on extreme closeups (MCON +closeups) initially and the remote is much more comfortable for that setup as well. Just remember to keep your eye to the eyepiece or shut it to avoid light contamination in either case.

The cable release is also better for portraits, you almost have to be in front of the camera for the remote to work. I have both and I use the cable release more than I use the remote. Would be nice if the cable was a little longer though.

In regards to that I read somewhere that you can trick the infra reciever by scotchtaping piece of paper at fron of it so you can trigger it from behind the camera

I use the cable release for portraits about 90% of the time. Just make SURE you close the eyepiece shutter, especially if you are outside. I have ruined a couple of pics by forgetting to do that. Also for portraits, especially of kids, the cable release is much better than the remote because there is no lag between pushing the button and the shutter firing. With the remote, there is a 2 second delay so if you are in the picture, you can hide the remote before the picture is taken.

Hey Todd, is that why there is a delay? I have always wondered. I hate it! Wish there was a way to turn that darned delay off! Guess the release would be better for me!

And let us not forget (if it has not already been mentioned), you cannot use the LCD live preview mode when you are using the wireless remote as opposed to the cable. (They want you to buy the cable!)

That 2-second delay- my experiments indicate that the camera is focussing during this period.

Have you noticed, by the way, that the mockup of the new 4/3 system has an infrared window in the back of the camera as well as the front for receiving signals from the wireless remote?

Hi AmandaA,

I purchased the remote cable and never used it. In fact I still have it though the E10 and the LiPO leave soon for new homes.

I was able to use the included remote for my needs. Unless there are special circumstances involved, I would feel most folks could use the included remote. The downside is the slight delay after pressing the button AND making sure the camera is in the right mode to use it.

Take care,
Can someone give me some advice on whether I should get a remote
cable release or stick with the remote control provided.
What are the differences and uses for these accessories?

Thankyou all for your replies.

I will look up the site recommended and experiment with the remote to see if it will be enough.

The cable is over $100 in Australia and I would prefer not to spend any more at the moment.
Take care,
Amanda

Hi Tony,

I would email you direct but my mailto function is broken. I was wondering if you still have the cable release for your E-10 and might sell it for a reasonable price? New, they are a little steep.

Thanks, Kim

Thanks Robert,

I have already ordered one from the shops --- We are going away on holidays next week to our beach house and I wanted it before I left--that is if the bushfires don't get there first!!
Amanda
NIB = New In Box. It's a common acronym used on eBay.
Amanda, if you are interested in a NIB cable release, send me an
email.
