The cable release allows me to trip the shutter easily on long
exposures (fireworks, night, etc,) without having to reach around
the camera with a free hand holding the remote. I used to use the
remote on extreme closeups (MCON +closeups) initially and the
remote is much more comfortable for that setup as well. Just
remember to keep your eye to the eyepiece or shut it to avoid light
contamination in either case.

The cable release is also better for portraits, you almost have to
be in front of the camera for the remote to work. I have both and
I use the cable release more than I use the remote. Would be nice
if the cable was a little longer though.

I use the cable release for portraits about 90% of the time. Just
make SURE you close the eyepiece shutter, especially if you are
outside. I have ruined a couple of pics by forgetting to do that.
Also for portraits, especially of kids, the cable release is much
better than the remote because there is no lag between pushing the
button and the shutter firing. With the remote, there is a 2 second
delay so if you are in the picture, you can hide the remote before
the picture is taken.
