What will we likely see with the G12?

Well, looking at the canonrumor site, I doubt that's what Canon have in mind. It seem like Canon rather have a pancake dSLR camera instead. So, we probably won't see larger sensor G-series, if the rumor is true. Personally, I would rather have larger sensor CMOS base in the G-series. I don't think people want smaller dSLR, but rather full control P&S w/ larger sensor.

The 1st picture is 100% fake. C'mon you guys should be able to easily see the lens barrel being way too big covering the OVF area.

The lens says 16.1-80.5 ? ... yeah it's too easy to add a "1" and change a "3" into an "8" from the original 6.1-30.5.

Anyway,
Here's what I'd do if I were Canon:
Give the G12 a 24-120mm f/2.0-3.8 ... and this is really not too much to ask!

For the sensor, use a 10MP 1/1.7" BI-CMOS similar to the ones in the SD4000 and SD4500, just larger and less dense, thus better high ISO IQ while enabling 1080p HD.

I'd buy a G12 like this over the LX5, but if the G12 only gets the same treatment as the S95 got going from the S90, then hello Panasonic and bye2x Canon.

Yeah, I am with you! :)

Though Nikon may have a surprise with the P7000.

Hard to believe still nothing on the G12 or P7000. :(
Oh I saw the wheel but still besides that it looks like a G11. I have the G10. Personally there is not enough within the G12 to move me there. I like the fixed LCD that is 3 inches plus the way the G10 feels compared to the G11 which will most likely feel the same as the G12. When I look at the next camera it will be the LX5 or P7000. So if I end up getting on of those I will most likely have a G10 for sale...in case anyone is interested.

Maybe I am wrong, but the control dial in the front, if indeed it is located there, would be disastrous. It seems that your finger, when holding the camera tightly, would constantly be turning the darn thing by mistake, especially when gripping the camera one handed. Does anyone else think that, or am I off base here? I mean the dial is placed right where your finger rests.

According to NikonRumors.com, the P7000 will be announced on September 8th, 2010:

Here is some updated specs for the new Nikon Coolpix P7000:
  • 10.1MP 1/1.7″ CCD sensor
  • 28-200mm equivalent zoom lens with f/2.8-5.6
  • Lens Shift Stabilizer
  • The same old Coolpix RAW mode (.NRW)
  • 720p HD 24fps
  • 3” LCD screen, 920k
Definitely a "G12 Killer" :D

Well I think the Nikon will look better than the G series! Hopefully not as bulky! I need a "cargo pants" or "Jeans" camera!

Sorry, let me correct this for you -
Definitely a "G12 Complete And Utter Clone " :D
lol. Just sayin' - except for a longer lens reach, doesn't that look exactly like the G12 specs, including 720p video @ 24fps??

The specs are good, but the 28-200mm equivalent zoom lens gives it the edge. :D

I had the G9 Really loved the way it performed, and all the controls were there to change instantly.

Only problem was that is was noisy at ISO 400

I would like to see the G12 with a 1" CCD (25.400mm) 24-120mm lens, so that ISO 800 photos would look like G9 ISO 200

If panasonic can make a GF1 so small with a 4/3 the G12 would only be a fraction bigger

Can't seem to see much of the body, but from the one pic I can find of it, it appears to have less direct access controls than the G11, and probably no swivel LCD. I like the extra long zoom though.

A 24-120 lens for 4/3 would be huge and hugely expensive though, compared to the G11's 1.7 sensor standard. Not to mention the price of the GF1 is about half again over a G11's and with only a single focal lens at that price.

But, from what I have read on here, that GF1 4/3 sensor means it needs much bigger lenses than a Canon G camera. Put a 5 x zoom lens on the GF1 and there's no way it will fit in a jacket pocket. An even bigger sensor in a G12 will mean an even larger lens.

The sensor is one thing, Canon just needs a faster lens on the G12, back like what the G-series stood for with the G3.
