i would like a high-quality ultra-wide zoom lens, wouldn't even mind it being f/4.

but fisheye, what on earth was canon thinking!?

The Ultra Wide zoom lens you're looking for is called the Sigma 8-16mm ... The Zoom Fisheye is a brilliant idea and would be welcomed by many creative people.

Guess Canon forgot the memo sent out telling them to cater the market to your needs.

I, for one, am excited about this lens.

As a Nikon user, I think it's brilliant. Proper fisheye for all sensor size formats in one lens. No need to worry about selling an APS-C oriented fisheye to buy a full frame fisheye lens when one upgrades. One fisheye lens fits all! And the ability to cover the frame or switch to 8mm/near 360 degree circular is a cool feature too. But yes, Canon seems to be missing an ultra wide rectilinear zoom a la Nikon's 14-24. I have no doubt Canon will provide that at some point. Both companies have announced some great gear this week!

I don't mis such fisheye soom, it is something to try for and for different visual effects, the superwide zoom to me is not as useful, I would rather have a few good wide lens, I did not use my 16-35 for 3 years now but I use my 35L, 24 TS-E and 17 TS-E quite often.

Canon was thinking outside of the box. This lens is a very creative endeavor for Canon and could be a big seller. If this lens is Sharp maybe with PP straightening out these images may prove to be very sharp as well. Can't wait for user reviews.

This lens looks amazing.

A fisheye zoom that gives you very different perspectives on FF and crop but should work equally well is genius in my eyes.

I can not wait to buy this lens. Looks like so much fun. This is 100% going in my water housing.

This fills a void that Canon had. It now makes just about every lens under the sun available from Canon.

I only use canon lenses
That way if I need a lens +body combo tweaking canon will do so
The Zoom Fisheye is a brilliant idea and would be welcomed by many creative people.
...and for the rest of us?
surely "creative" = small market?
"ultra-wide rectilinear" = slightly larger market?

Canon was thinking I had $1,400 to give them for an early manufactured example.

Its cool and considering all Canon supertelephotos RESET their cost to more than Nikon's cost today, the 8-15mm FE is a BARGAIN.

If you don't like it, don't buy it...

ultra wide rectilinear is pretty well handled by the 17 TSE...

Well hopefully Canon makes a lens that suits your needs.

Just because the lens is for a niche market doesn't mean it shouldn't exist, there can be no harm done with more choice.

i think this will sell more than you think. the fact that it is very flexible for all size canon sensors is brilliant. if it proves to be exceptionally sharp even more people with want to have this IMO. they just overhauled a bunch of their existing lenses with nothing new but just better versions coming. at least this is something fresh.

May be Canon was thinking, humm, since we can't compete with other guys on distortion and corner to corner sharp super WA zoom, why not just go one step further and make a more distorted lens, and you can't make a lens with more distortion than a fisheye, so bimgo, here we go, a L-Fisheye !!! :)

1 fisheye lens for 3 sensor sizes

ultra wide would be 16-35 or 17-40 for 135 or 10-22 for APS-C

Excellent for QTVR !!!! If it will not cost another kidney on the black market, I may get it. (already sold three of my kindeys to pay for lenses ;) ).

E, F and EF shooter, no system is perfect

The current fisheye dates from early 1980's, it's about time they came out with something for the virtual tours / qtvr market.

They recently revamped the 16-35mm, so that is your UWA, why complain? You can get the Nikon 14-24 and an adapter and have the best of both worlds.
