hello all

first post on here and i probably wont make many more as im not much of a photographer.

what little i do know is thanks to reading this forum.im a very amateur birding photographer.thats to say i go walks with my dog with a camera round my neck.
ive just traded my fz38 in for the 100,previously had the 28.

so a quick experiment shooting at full zoom, then with i-zoom,followed by 5m ez+i-zoom and finally holding my panny 1.7 tc in front of the lens.

i had worries that the IS might fail me with the tc at full zoom, but it seemed to cope.

i usually shoot in the ez modes because its easier to get a lock on a small subject.
pics taken from about 6 metres with my dog jumping on my back.

thanks for looking
neil

Hi Neil. Welcome to the forum. We're glad you're posting some findings on the FZ100. It would be much easier to read your posts if you would please capitalize the first letter of each sentence. I don't mean to nitpick, but as someone who does not text message, I have trouble following some of the new writing styles!

Your first picture looks pretty clear. After that, the softness looks significant. Is this a normal progression with the increased zoom, in your experience? What are your thoughts about that? Others seem to be satisfied.
I'm seriously considering the FZ100 for birding and other nature shots.

Sorry i didn't know the exif was missing.
All were taken in aperture mode at full zoom,so f5.2
AF mode 1 area
Shutter speed was 1/125 on all
ISO was,in order,400,320,320,250.

I dont think a degree of softness can be avoided at full zoom especially with the teleconverter.
But im no expert.

I will try to get some shots of the resident Sparrows in the morning, with and without the teleconverter

Neil

Thanks, Neil. Look forward to your next post. I've never used a teleconverter, so not sure how it effects things other than to add zoom effect. With such a large zoom on the FZ100, I wonder if the TC isn't overkill.

Hi Neil,

Your results would certainly satisfy me. I've had the 28, now the FZ35 and will get the FZ100 soon. I use zoom and EZ zoom a lot and also look forward to the burst modes.

Jack

One picture without any zoom would have been nice, just to see from what kind of distance youre taking these :P but nice pics anyway

Hello again
Been out this morning with a ball as suggested by Rai.
All pics taken in Aperture at full zoom, apart from the wide shot.
Nice sunny morning which helped.

Bear in mind the TC shots are achieved by holding it in front of the camera,as no adaptor as yet.

I'm more than happy with the camera,as it suits my needs of a longer reach and high burst rate.
If i've done this right you should be able to view the originals at

And finally seen this Blue tit as i went to start the experiment.
Maybe a little more distant.

Thanks so much.

Real world long-end-zoom of far distant objects samples (birds better) is the test for a super zoom compact camera.

Your IZ and EOZ and TC are highly appreciated also.

Been thinking of buying the FZ100 but have been worried about all the negative comments I've read here. I've owned an FZ1, FZ3 FZ7 and FZ35 in the past and loved them. I was concerned about not getting any detail at all if I needed to crop an FZ100 picture. I'm considering the LX5 for that very reason but these pictures are making me rethink the LX5. If I was to take the 1st wide shot of the tennis ball with both the FZ100 and LX5, my guess is that I would get more detail using the FZ100 at max zoom than an LX5 at max zoom + crop. Would a cropped pic from the LX5 match Picture #2 for detail? Wouldn't the FZ100 win?

But what would you get from an LX5 pic of the same bird at a huge distance cropped that big? Would it be better?

I did the same thing, went to flickr and pixel peeped this shot. Not bad considering the settings. It will be interesting to see some raw shots at some point to see how much detail can be extracted from such shot. Shooting birds requires settings and more work than most people need or want. I use jpg but set contrast, sharpness and NR to low. Post processing can then get more detail out of feathers and more dynamic range. Really appreciate these pictures as they are the best examples so far of what this camera does. All in all it looks very promising.

Without question, the LX5 could not be cropped that much - the FZ100 would win easily. Not only does it have a 6.67x longer lens, it also has 40% more pixels.
