I've got not a nice experience with my D7u.
There was 5 degr. Celsius above and I needed to
take pictures outside.
I decided to "shot" but camera didn't.
It focused well (by pressing half down shutter button), but when
I fully pressed shutter it didn't do anything.
I have to say I was pretty embarrased- you can
imagine when you need to take a quick shot of
fast moving wild animals.

I'm just wondering what's going to happen in real
winter (20 degr. Celsius below).

Hi Petr!

My solution to your problem is to move to a warmer climate, as I'm about to do! LOL

Massachusetts to Florida for me (as soon as the house is sold!)

Then there's no troubles with "freeze-ups"!

Sorry, don't have any "real" help for you.

I wonder if this was a low battery problem or something. I've used the D7 at -15F without problems, and have used both the internal AA's (just kept it under my coat when not shooting), or an external battery pack kept under my coat, and both worked fine. Just seal it in a ziplock plastic bag when you go inside, to prevent condensation inside the camera.

Gee and most people complain it gets too hot.

Sounds like a low battery problem to me. I was out taking pictures today and had the same problem as you described, but only because the battery was running down low after about 70 mostly flash shots. I replaced the batteries with another charged set, and no more problems. Maybe the low temperture and weak cells caused the problem.

Hi Bob,

I was thinking to take winter pictures from inside through window.
That would be probably only chance to take pictures in following
months. (till spring come?)
Petr

I hope that was just an sporadic failure. And it won't occure again.

I agree -- I had no real probs with the camera last winter in Michigan/Ontario. Some days I used the digi-power external nimh pack, which I kept in an inside pocket with the wire running out my zipper (jacket, that is) -- shot all day in 15 f.

Thats what the manual says.

But anyway, I think it's battery related too, my experience with Ni-Cds (not NiMh)) from R/C flying during winter is that low temperature really is a disaster for their performance. Don't know if NiMh is better though.

Wear the batteries close to you body until it's time to shoot!

Cheers

Ya
you could be right. That was just first occurance of that. I wouldn't say
that batteries were exhausted - I used them for (30?) pictures may be.

What I didn't mention is that camera freezed. I had to open and close battery dock to restart it. Main switcher just didnt react on turning of it.

I heard once that battery get exhausted outside at cold conditions
pretty quickly.
Petr
Thanks for replies - it helps to my "soul" that there is no problem with camera.

Nimh batteries are a lot weaker at cold temperatures. You can see a graph at http://data.energizer.com/batteryinfo/application_manuals/nickel_metal_hydride.htm

You should keep the battery compartment of the camera as warm as possible, perhaps by keeping it under your coat until you're ready to shoot.
