...the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 EX DG lens on a 5DII? I normally shoot primes (24mm, 50mm, and 85mm), but I've got a trip with the family coming up at the end of October to Disney World, and the thought of lugging around 3 lenses to cover the types of shots I normally take, along with all the other stuff, isn't really that appealing. I've read most of the reviews on Amazon.com about this lens, but the ones that talk ill of it don't really offer up any substance (more about bad customer service, etc...). Anyone have any experience with this lens? Good or bad? I'm not really wanting to spend the kind of money needed for the 24-70L, especially with all the rumors that it's about to be upgraded this year. Thanks in advance for any advice. Jason G.

Have you considered the 24-105L IS ? The range is better, the IS is very helpfull, the IQ is excellent and it's considerably lighter than the 24-70L. I doubt that you would miss the extra stop of aperture at Disneyland.

Thanks for the replies. I guess at the end of the day, there's no substitute for the saying "you get what you pay for". A local "pro" here uses the 24-105 on his 5D (original), and at times, some of his shots seem soft with this lens. I guess when you're spending that much money, what's a 'few hundred more', and just bite the bullet and go with the 24-70 by Canon. :-|

Earlier in the year, i decided to take a trip to DisneyWorld in HongKong, I shoot primes with my 1ds MKII and wasnt crazy about bringing them for a family holiday. So I bought a 24-105 and brought along a 35 L for the trip.

I felt, of course I might not be as demanding, that the 24-105 was good enough. I had previously sold one off cos I didnt like it.

You can take a look at the photos from the trip here:

It's in facebook, but the album is not set to private so I believe you can see it. Otherwise just log in to facebook.

Hi Jason

I bought one of these with my 10D many years ago. It proved to be soft. I cannot recommend this lens.

I've bought Canon L lenses ever since. I like the Canon 24/105 on the 5Dii as a general walkaround lens.

Regards

Chris

Hi

To say that the 24-105 produces pics that are soft just shows how little knowledge one has!!
It is just rubbish to say a thing like that!

First, to see that a lens is soft you have to do some serious pixel peeping, which seems impossible with another pro's pics if you don't have them in electronic format.
Second, the 24-105 is Not soft. Not in any way. It is crystal sharp. A razor...

Here's a summary from another site if it helps - "Overall, Sigma’s 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom is lighter, more compact and considerably less costly than Canon’s, Nikon’s and Sony’s equivalent zooms. It is also a pleasure to use and returns some excellent results. It isn’t perfect but it is a fine lens that is definitely worthy of consideration by anybody who is in the market for a pro-spec, full-frame standard zoom".

Thanks for the reply and the info. After doing some soul-searching, I decided to go ahead and just get the Canon 24- 70L. My son is in the 1st grade now, and I'll have plenty of school plays, Christmas Programs, Church choir singing, etc..., to make use of this lens, whether or not I'm going to Disney.

Thanks again, everyone.
