Best Buy warranty experiences

I am considering buying an F-717 from Best Buy. They have a four-year warranty plan for $100. Salesman says it includes battery replacement, which, he says, would be needed within 1 ½ to 2 years. (That would pay for at least half of the warranty plan.) So – I’d like comments from some of you who have had to use the Best Buy warranty, and the outcome. Thanks!

I've used mine on both my cameras - P50 with a battery drain problem, and my 707 that instead of going to Sony for the BFS fix, was replaced by BB. It was painless and as for the 707 - they even kept the old camera until i was happy with the new one!

up until last week i worked for them - however, both replacements happened prior to working there. I saw a lot of customers disappointed because they didn't have the warrenty (i worked last in customer service). And i saw shocked customers recieve new stuff because they had it.

I would get it again on the camera. Like he said, the battery coverage alone is worth it. I didn't stress about being on vacation and plugging the camera into the wall - i knew it was covered for power surges.

Another nice thing is that it is transferable - so it's an incentive to a buyer that it's covered.

My 707 was just sent to Sony by Best Buy to see if it is cost effective to fix it. Reading Tracy's comments now I see why I got different answers about the fixing of my 707. The first employee I talked to said I would be getting a replacement, just needed to wait for the 717 to come in, but then when it did both of my local stores' employees said no, they had to send it in for Sony to say it wasn't cost effective to fix. They said Best Buy couldn't make that call about fixablility. Though the one that was closest to me that I used to send my 707 in said he thought Sony would probably say I need a replacement since I probably need a new LCD. That's like the guts of the camera and I'm sure the other parts will be shown to be very worn after over 50,000 photos.

I should hear as early as Wednesday the status of my 707. Will let you guys know what happens.

Mmmm. The BB guy said that BB had its own repair shop right in Denver! He said nothing about sending a camera to Sony. I mentioned to him that an official Sony repair station was in Denver, but he said they didn't use it.

This is exactly why I purchased my 717 from Sears with the Master Replacement Agreement. Sears will give me a new camera if anything goes wrone - no questions asked. Sears won't send it in for repair. This peace of mind is worth the $150 for 2 years.
 
Well, the Broomfield and Westminster Best Buys both said Sony had to decide if the camera was worth fixing. They said Best Buy doesn't fix Sony cameras. Guess I will see what happens and if it is Best Buy or Sony that contacts me on Wednesday.

There are a variety of product classes at BB - the 2 main are Devo and service. (i think i can talk about this without violating anything).

Devo - goes back to manuafcture as defective. If it's not broken, the store gets it back theoritically.

Service - goes to a BB service center. In the case of Sony, they then go to Sony.

Most Sony products are Service. Other cameras/stuff vary. I saw a Canon S30 get devo for a broken zoom button! I tried to buy that cheap . It's a classification done at the corporate level - the store would get your camera back to resell/return to you if they sent it devo. Needs to go thru service first.

I don't hold it against BB, i think a repair at this point is possible. But in 6 months less likely. The more stores abuse the Devo flag, the more stuff will come up service. But rest assured, if they do service it, from what i gather it will be fixed by Sony.

LEt us know what they say - 50k shots?!?! Ye gads, i better get shooting!!!

My Sears store has teh Master Replacement Agreement, but it's only for one year (+ Sony's warranty) for $150. Can you read your agreement brochure and confirm the terms?

This peace of mind is worth the $150 for 2 years.
 
Thanks Tracey for the explanation.

I am hoping that replacing the LCD will not be cost effective at this stage of the camera's life, had one replaced in my Nikon CP990 when it was brand new, and the other parts worn enough that they will want me to just get a new replacement.

Hopefully they really do call me on Wednesday for an update.

I also just bought mine from Sears. Paid $999+tax+$150 for the MRA. My MRA states in the "term" section:

"This MRA will cover your product for one (1) year from the expiration of the manufacturer's full warranty. If the manufacturer's warranty is ninety (90) days labor, one (1) year parts, this MRA would provide one (1) year, three (3) months of coverage from the date of purchase. Manufacturer's warranties may vary. See Salesperson for specific product warranties."

So because of the 90-day labor, 1-yr parts warranty on the 717, the term of the MRA is for one year and three months from the day of purchase.
This is exactly why I purchased my 717 from Sears with the Master
Replacement Agreement. Sears will give me a new camera if anything

This peace of mind is worth the $150 for 2 years.
 
I bought my 707 from best buy. i prefer to have the sears warranty, my question. Would I be able to purchase a warranty from Sears on a camera I bought at best buys?
