Ansel routinely lugged 40 pounds on his back, including a wooden
tripod. That guy was amazing. For one hike up to phtograph half
dome in Yosemite, he carried just 12 photographic plates. Twelve
shots -- I use 15 or 20 just trying to figure out what apperture
and shutter to use.
Incidently, he got the shot in a two takes -- he shot 10 on the way
up, but wind/camera shake (dang wooden tripods) ruined them. That
left just two shots for his final attempt -- one with a yellow
filter, and the keeper with a red.
I learned all this on-line at the SF MOMA:

Why is it I can remember junk like this, but consistently forget my
PIN number at the ATM?
I had a Tamrac summit 777,it would hold everthing and has a system
where you can add on lens bags etc. The drawback is it weighs a
ton when full. I sold it on e-bay a while back, I'm getting to old
to carry all that stuff around on my back. The 787 is even
bigger,go to the site and see the line.... Good luck,Rich
Thanks, Rich. I'll go check out these two. I've been hiking around
with a shoulder bag for now. But today I was feeling my age too.
Hmmm...how old was Ansel Adams when he was trekking around his
gear? Maybe I need a sherpa, huh?
