I whant to buy canon 5D MKII.

Which kind of lens is good for Portrait & landscape?

A single lens for portrait and landscape will always be a compromise, but the 24-105mm F4 IS L will be good.

The 24 to 105 is indeed a cracking lens and is reason enough for buying your first quality Canon over say a Nikon (which doesn't have anything like it).

24 is a genuinely useful wide angle which does not distort too much. 105 gives you a nice telephoto and used wide open blurs the background nicely. The lens also has anti shake technology which works well and effectively gives you another couple of f stops to play with.

It is a heavy lens if you intend walking around with it a lot.

While I do use telephoto focal lengths for portraits I probably take more using a wide angle, which allows you to place the subject firmly in their setting.

To that end my everyday lens is the Canon 40 - 17. But you may find that the 24 - 105 gives you everything you need in one lens.

The first question that must be asked:

How much money are you able to spend? You are buying a camera with a high Megapixel, full frame sensor. This camera will expose a cheap lens for what it is in a heartbeat. It you can afford a prime or two, that would be the best route. 24mm is excellent on full frame, so either the 24L II or the even better 24 TSE II are top choices. Also, the Zeiss 21mm Distagon is a winner for landscape. On the portrait side, it all depends on the type. Are you planning to shoot mostly body shots or head shots? The 85L has long been the "go to" lens for headshots on full frame. The 135L also makes for great headshots too. A 35mm to 50mm range from either Canon or Zeiss would make a good body shot prime. Then again, you can look to one of the L zooms for a sort of all-in-one solution if need be, like the 24-70 or 24-105. You do gain versaltility there and you could pair it up with one of the 70-200's.

Photography, like many other hobbies, persuits and art forms, is first and foremost about having fun and exploring.

24-70/2.8 is great, but quite heavy as a kit with the 5DII. I think 24-105/4L is lighter and has a slightly longer range

Hi Ross, love your pictures, very inspiring, especially the Panoramas and (The north Cascades) what Camara do you use for these impressive pictures, interested to know what lens you use for your Panorama shots.
King regards John
