I was waiting for D700 refresh for quite a while just to be able to get hold of D700 at a cheaper price to replace my D200. D700 used to be around $2600 - $2700 for the past little while here in Canada and I was not ready to pay that much.

No the price has dropped, it is selling for $2400 or less which is what I was hoping for. I know, it is not a huge difference, but psychologically, it works better for me.

Anyway, I've got one yesterday and now I am questioning myself if I made a good decision by buying a camera at the end of its life cycle just to save $300-$400. Not that I need video or anything like that, but higher ISO never hurts, right?

So, I am sitting with a sealed D700 box scratching my head if I need to take it back to the store or let it go, open and enjoy the camera for the next 3-4 years, at least...

No help, but I feel your pain. I've got a D3 but would kill for a D700s (i.e., D700 body with the D3s sensor, hopefully with a few more MPs thrown in for good measure). The grass is always greener . . .

How many months did you wait to save $200?

If a replacement for the D700 was announced today you probably couldn't get your hands on one for at least three months, perhaps longer. Then it would probably cost you $3,200. For what? Most likely slightly better high ISO shooting, and video. Worth $800 to you?

Well, to be completely honest, I was a new house, new heating, new AC, furniture, vacation, recession and a couple of more other things on the way as well. Still a lot in the pipeline, but as I said, "psychologically" a sale justifies the purchase :-)

Nope, definably it does not. Should I open then? :-)))))))))))

open it, use it enjoy it! a wonderful camera, I have one for 2 years and if I should buy another body I would buy a D700 again, even if a new camera is due to be announced.

Just open it and start enjoying what you have obviously wished for for so long.Once you start using it, buyers remorse will no longer be a problem. You have in your pssession one of the best cams out there - so use it.

That is just my opinion, but at this point, I would just wait.

The exception would be if NOT buying one would cause financial damage, then you would have to weigh situation differently.

Nonsense! Simply buy the D700 refresh model as well.

See how easy that was... Happy shooting.

I agree with you. 2 year old technology is almost ancient these times. The next camera that will come (I hope in a few months) will have significantly better characteristics than the current D700. Just my 2 cents.

I just bought mine as well this past friday and didn't hesitate to take it out of the box and use it right away and have a thread about it with my first outing with it "Finally took the plunge..." . The way I see it , D700 is more camera than I could possibly need, sure newer is always going to be better but I guarantee you it will cost you about 700-800 more including taxes than this model...if you want to pay that much more for newer technology go ahead. Basically just think if having a D3s will make THAT much a difference to you for the kind of shooting you do than having a D700. I upgraded from a D80, and there is a worlds difference. Difference, that won't be the same going from a D700 to its successor.

KG2002, you're waiting for a better price when the upgrade is announced, right? You don't plan to get the upgrade but want to take advantage of the cost savings that you anticipate. Well, that can go on forever. And if there's a D700 successor, it may not drive the price down any further. This is not about price. This is about using the camera you want. Give it to yourself and stop stressing about money.

Well after I was shooting digital almost exclusively, I still felt nothing measured up to my F100 film camera. With the D700, that changed. The D700 is pretty much everything I could ask for. Don't wait... unbox it and use it. As others have said, the replacement will not be available for months, even if it is announced tomorrow. Who knows - you may get hit by a bus!

If your happy with the technology in the D700 use it. If I was looking to buy something FF right now, I would personally pick up a slightly used D3, they are now selling below $3K. I would rather have one of those at $500 more (used), rather than a new D700 for $2400.

The D700 is the best thing since sliced cheese and memory cards! Use it now and forever cast aside any doubts!

Also, any new product has a general rule that the first 10,000 units out of the factory would be the ones which may contain bugs and quality control issues. Look at the Sony F707 (BFS blue flash syndrome), 5mp sensor defect affecting Canon/Casio/Sony,etc many years ago, 1D Mk 4 autofocus, 7D autofocus, iPhone 4...

Whenever it is that the D700s finally gets launched, you may get a lemon while the D700 is proven and bug-free. Sure, it's nice to have the latest but you pay more and you may chance upon a lemon - in the meantime, the D700 is plenty fantastic as a photographic tool and you'll take full advantage of it NOW in your hands.

It never ceases to amaze me how the only people who bang on about a D700 repleacement are those who have never used one.

For the life of me, I would wager than less than a few % of D700 and D3(s) owners feel they need an upgrade.
