Today I shot under bright sunlight and to my big surprise I noticed dust on the inside of the LCD monitor. I thought the D3s body was weather-sealed and dust could never get into the inside of the LCD monitor. Is that normal?

Dust can come anywhere...that is the problem of dust and it is not brand specific as well :-)
Most likely, it's there since the camera is put together.

Bring it to a service center if it bothers you.

A bit of a revived thread -- but just so you know -- Nikon considers dust behind the LCD monitor the D3 and the D700 to be normal.

They WILL replace it if you want -- but there is no guarantee that it won't arise on a replacement.

I wouldn't worry about it.

together in a clean room. The conditions are clean, yes, but not to the degree they are in making the sensor.

That being said, I have handled lots of cameras but never encountered sust in the LCD...

Can you post a picture of it? Where exactly is it? I mean the rear LCD glass substrate seems really well bonded and sealed to the top of the LCD itself... it should be a single unit put together during manufacture of said LCD sandwich.

Thanks

My has tons of it and I too was flipping out when I first noticed it and till today I am wondering how this could be happening to Nikon's Pro equipment...

Mine is in the bottom right corner, and there is a lot of it.

But, like I said, Nikon has stated in two separate calls to them that it is normal. They gave the option of replacing the LCD ( up to 6 weeks turnaround) or just leaving it as is. Clearly I am not giving up my primary camera for 6 weeks. (Some report a two-week turnaround in the US).

Sorry I don't have a photo to post -- if I figure out how to do that, I will.

It's only noticable when the LCD is turned off.

Here's a couple photos from my D700 -- it looks identical on the D3 at work...

My D300 and D700 had the same issues, Nikon cleaned an replaced the lcd-glass under warranty in both cases with not problems.
And they were 100% tight after the glass-replacement.

Unfortunately I'm having the same problem too... it seems to have entered from the lower right hand corner of the screen.

So far it's not giving me any problems, but if it gets too bad I'm sending it in.

My local independent camera repair man says he sees a lot of contam behind the lcd glass on Nikons. On my two D3 cameras, it takes the form of a dull haze that never goes away. Nikon cleaned one of my D3's once, but later the haze came back, only now it shows the wipe-strokes of the Nikon tech's Q-Tip swab. I am disappointed that Nikon doesn't fix this in the design. Do Canon 'pro' bodes have a similar issue??? Lame, lame, lame... Fortunately, it has no effect whatsoever on the picture-taking qualities of the camera.

Yes, I agree, and have had the same problem on both the D3 and the D700 -- but it really makes zero difference, and it isn't worth the time to send it in to "clean"...It just makes the back of the camera look dirty all the time.

I just posted recently my experience with a similar, and like problem as described in this thread. It is here:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1021&thread=36015600

What I have determined is that there is a break-down in the sealing agent used to attach the LCD glass to the body, which causes a haze-like condition, or perhaps a dust-like situation. My D3 experienced this condition for about a year, until I discovered that there was a fogging moisture condition between the glass and the LCD. As explained in the above linked post, it was fixed by Nikon, even though it was almost 2 years past the expiration of the warranty.

If you have "dust" behind the glass there is probably a break-down of the sealing agent and there may be consequences of moisture evading the LCD area and could cause more damage. I would be very surprised that the dust condition is a result of the manufacturing procedures. I do not want to be an alarmist, but if you eventually experience a fogging like I describe in the above link, I would attend to getting it fixed.

I brought the camera to cs and the technical guy there was surprised at the amount of dust inside the LCD after such a short period of usage (less than 2 months). They offered to fix it for free and it took about a week. No more dust has found its way to the back of LCD ever since.

I have this problem with my D300, the dust works it way behind the LCD screen via the multi-directional button. If you blow into that button, you just might see condensation from your breath appear on the inside of the LCD glass. I gave up on ever getting it resolved to my satisfaction after just one try, although it did come back from Nikon service somewhat better than it was before.

From day 1 I could see swipe marks under the protective glass covering the main LCD.

Now it's gotten worst with dust & maybe fungus. It's milky and is clearly visible when the LCD is turned off.

Can I simply remove that glass & clean the underside with some lens cleaning solution?

How can I remove the glass?

I cannot send the camera for servicing at the present.

Just got my brand new D700 two days ago, and there was a piece of lint in the view finder... I was speechless. It was behind the focusing screen.

No,you can't just take it off, you have to send it in.

I sent mine in -- it was extending to almost a full 1/8th of the LCD from the bottom right corner. It was back to me in less than 7 days and looks terrific - Nikon even cleaned everything up for free (i.e. cleaned the viewfinder glass, etc).

The "dust" under the LCD is typical with the D1, D3, and D700. I hadn't heard it happening to the D300, but apparently the D300s has the same problem.

At either rate -- it doesn't effect your camera at all, just the display; but Nikon will repair it for free. (I think they swap out the entire LCD screen, they don't clean it).

I don't mean to intrude on this thread, but I was

curious if you knew if the Nikon D3 and D3s

main rear LCD window is of the same size?

I found a site that charges half the cost of a D3 window replacement

than that of a D3s oddly to say.

I have the D3.
