Hi all,

Found an hour to go out and take some pictures of the sunset this evening, it was very cold near the river and I met a kind guy there and took some pictures of him (and also some of policemen that I will process later). The shot was taken about an half our after the sunset and it was already quite dark and I had to overexpose to get some detail in the man. The first shot is untouched and straight out of the camera. It is incredible how much detail and color information is in pictures who seems bad ones at the first sight but I wanted to show what can be done with it in Photoshop with not that much work to prove how many information there is in such an image. I love Photoshop, it's the best darkroom that I could dream. Would like to hear if you like this or what could be done better ? And to finish one of the sunset this evening.

Hello Dirk, good to see you back! I think I would like a version that was half way between the first and second of the man.
These done with the Fuji S2Pro?

Dirk: Incredible as always. Can you keep the highlights you have in the second version and lighten up the background just a bit? I think that's all it needs :)

As for the third shot, I love it!!

Hello Dirk,

Well, we cannot get the perfect light for the perfect picture most of the time. I agree with Jarrell, in my (unprofessional) opinion I think the second one looks unnatural. How about darkern that kind guy just a little bit. Like Jarrell said "half and half"? :)

I'm pretty sure that if you used fill flash the picture still no better than the one post processed with PS.

With warm regards,
Bimo.

Yesterday I went to take some shots of a car rally that was nearby.

I couldn't get anwhere near where I could get an unrestricted view, or an interesting angle, so I left after taking only a couple of shots.

Last night I tried to salvage something from the day and here is a sample of how photoshop helped.

p.s. When I work out how to submit pics with my message I will do this in the future.

Cheers.

Lovely photos, they look like an autumn evening, northern hemisphere with it's endless period of dusk. What camera did you use for those shots, the third one seemed to be on the ww end??

Hi Muriel,

Thanks for your very kind words. I also prefer mostly the darker real life versions and I normally never use flashlight for this reason but in this one I think that the man will prefer the second version for having a portrait of him, he gives me his address and I will let print it as postcards and send him one and later a dozen others and a cd-rom for thanking him for the nice talk we had there. This was not at the beach but at the border of the river 'De Schelde' not so far from my home, for reaching a beach I have to drive about 100 Km. Hé Muriel and this was certainly not a fisherman but I agree that he has that 'look'.

Hi Hariette,

I'm using the Fuji S2 Pro but I'm posting here from time to time to meet some friends and great photographers like Jarrell and because my heart is still tending to Nikon (lenses, the body of the Fuji is a Nikon, my accessories are Nikon).

Hi Jarrell,

Thanks very much Jarrell and nice to hear you to. Someting like this one Jarrell ?

I was showing this to show how many information is in such kind of shot on color levels and detail. And yes they are from my S2, really love that camera Jarrell, hope that you will have one sooner or later.

Hi Bimo,

Thanks for your comment and I agree that half and half would have a more natural look, now it seems like if I used a flash but I did this to show how many colors and detail are stored in images that seems at the first sight not very flattering. Here is a version with a less pronounced light effect.
