D700 Successor Speculation and Question

Don't wait.

As much as I would like to see a D700s (really want a D3s for the ISO performance but can't afford it) with the D3100 and D95 coming out in August and September, there will NOT be a D700 upgrade this year. Based on past history, you would be waiting until Spring for another body release.

If a D700 will take the images you want, get it sooner, rather than later so that you can learn to use get the most out of it. The chance of a new body being announced/available/affordable in your timeframe is not likely.

A new model won't make the old model suddenly unable to take great images.

I could not agree more...get it now...learn it, get the most out of it, you will not be disappointed.

So MIchel, you've been quiet lately on the rumour front. Is Nikon releasing a D700s or will wait for new sensor, AF, so likely only after D4 comes?

OT: Holland did well against Brazil.
no, according to many sources , the D700 sucessor is just the D700 with D3s sensor and video.
Which sources?
I think there will be a bit more added than just that.

Michel
I'm leaving for a year long travel from the end of December, so I'm upgrading my D300 to a D700. If a successor is announced before December and if it is a substantial upgrade, I might try to swing one, but otherwise I'm going to stick to my guns and get the D700. I'm just curious if it's worth waiting or if it just doesn't matter.
buy it now and get used to the FF focal length or lost reach before you actually leave and you will be fine.

I think as many people say until D4 gen in 2011 or later , higher MP FF from Nikon will not show up.

and after D4 , there will be the D900 with the D4 sensor.

I had the same dilemma couple of months ago....but I listened and pulled the trigger from this forum. Man, I don't regret this decision at all!
The camera is amazing and lived up to every expectation I had.

Don't wait.......this camera will be relevant for a long time regardless the replacement model or not.

to wait or not...

why don't you wait a couple of years, you are going to have a better camera for sure...in the meantime read these posts and have a look at people images with their D700s

a manager of Bic camera Horosima and Fukuoka and you know Kitamura(it is a big camera shop in Japan) ?

I personally know these people and they go many big Nikon conferences and Expos in Japan and they say that the upcoming model will be the D700 with D3s sensor.

And so , now I am wating detail about the upcoming 5D3.

They share some info with me because I've spent a lot of money there and they know I will spend more if they speak on these and when they're drunk they speak more.

I can't wait to meet the guy again and ask if there will be new 85f1.4G ED at phtokina, if so , I need to sell my Zeiss 85f1.4ZF2.

I think then you will have to wait the D4.
I like to see build in wireless transmitter
The new focus system
new type of LED based build in flash
And to keep the 1080 nagging stopping..1080 video :-)

Hi Renato,

Im a bit quiet because so much is coming! :-)

Im almost sure the new AF system will be used in most future cameras also due to movie functionality. I may not say anything specifically about new models.
OT: Holland did well against Brazil.
Now I have to travel a lot here in Japan, hardly any time to watch television, except now during Obon :-)

If you meant during WC, yes they played well against Brazil only final was horrible :-)

Still Brazil play is always magic, they play with a kind of souplesse no other team can show.

Hi Pandalee,

Yes, I know those stores however not in those places. I have family working in electronics wholesales and retail business in Japan. I know a little about how some type of electronic ordering from Nikon works and how sales staff training is working. :-)

LOL I think the only info I get when I drink something with my family and discuss details of their work at an izakaya, is in the form of the bill :-)

the D700s is out already? I must of slept thru it :(

Accoridng to NR a new 24-120 f/4 VR and 28-300VR FX would be out. A new continous AF mode for video has apparently been developed and to be seen on entry level D3100 model.

NR has been dead on about near term annoucements, so I would keep my faith in them.

What seems strange is, the two new FX lenses are such a perfect match to a new video capable FX body, that i believe a new video capable FX should be annouceed alongside them. (one rumor is the new FX was delayed to wait for the 24-120 f/4 VR to be ready - which might well be true)

It would be even more strange if the lowest-end D3100 has the continous video AF and the D700 successor doesn't. Even a D700S (as in mini D3S) type of camera should have this new video AF baked in.

Throw in the rumor that Sony have a 24MP video capable EXMOR FF sensor coming. seems like the "D800" or "D900" concept still have some life in it.

So i hope.

For D700 owners, is there anything you long for?
Nothing more really for me. Surely even better high ISO would be nice as well as a bit extra photographic latitude (both never hurt :-) ), but frankly current performance more then enough for what I am shooting.
Agreed, I am more than satisfied with the IQ results from the D700. 100% VF, and IR remote would be great. Can live without SD memory. Better high ISO will probably eventuate but incrementally and same for DR.

Have you tried the Seculine Twin1 R4N Infrared Remote Controller? Only US$49.99 from Amazion or B&H. I got one and it works perfectly. :-)

That's possible, and it could very well have been this(shameless cocktail photo):

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jonsiegel/4860040409/

:)

I guess the D700 is the way to go. I'm not the type to wait for new tech based on rumors, but after getting a good dose of nikonrumors.com I thought I'd hit the forums out of curiosity.
Hi Jonathan,

I just saw the cocktail bar is the 8-Bit Cafe in Shinjuku.

That explains why the pictures look that bad. Next time go a 16-Bit cafe and all be fine.

best,

Dré

I'm still holding out - didnt really want to - on my second D700. I'd sort of like a mine D3s, close handling, bit better High ISO, movie mode. I'd the just need to find an UW housing for it...

Best Regards

Thorsten

It does everything I want, plus more...

24MP is nice, but you know the price will double. If they upgrade it will likely be the D3s sensor and video. Maybe a bit more resolution, but nothing that will do any good. Price will be higher than what the D700 is right now, so again, is it worth it? We will have to wait to see :)

Ai-S all the way!

Ive only seen 2 lenses, which both are mentioned on the website of NR. Cant comment about the other 2 :-) For so far I know press and partners are not allowed to publish anything or make anything publicallly yet. Someone made a mistake probable... :-)

The new focusing system was already discussed by a Nikon employee at a Nikon photo club in Japan months ago, thats when I posted it here, as a rumor of course :-)

There will be a surprise yet to be seen, for so far I know it will be at Photokina, in Germany.

I suspect that it's HIGHLY likely the D700 was set to auto increase ISO when needed and was increasing it's to 1200+. They don't really show you it's happening unless you look at photo info or the settings.
