Just received my Canon s90 today and noticed a clicking sound that occurs when the camera is on and being moved around, especially in the direction of pointing towards the ceiling to pointing at the ground. I've come across the term "flex." I am completely new to this and was wondering if that is what it was, if all canon s90s have that sound, and if I should return it??
Thanks!
First, congratulations on your new camera!
I've never heard of that problem with cameras before. I looked it up; it seems that you have different materials (metal and plastic) used in its construction.
As I understand it, the principle that makes a thermostat work is that one metal expands faster than the other, so I'm sure something like that could happen. Was there possibly a large temperature differential, like the camera had been out in the heat and you brought it into an air-conditioned room?
It seems a bit strange that it only happens when the camera is on and only when pointing it up and down. I guess as the battery warms up, that could be a factor.
I'd suggest you shoot a bunch of pictures with it (as in, as soon as possible, while it can be returned). Don't worry about creating great art---you're testing equipment. So if you have a dog, don't shoot one picture...shoot five or six. Zoom, use flash, turn flash off, indoors and outdoors, whatever. That sort of thing. Basically put the camera through its paces.
If you're not getting good images it could be that something is loose or misaligned etc.
If you haven't already, you might also pose your question in the Canon forum. I found this thread; it looks like this issue went around some 10 months ago, so it may be that more people have encountered it and can give you a better opinion.

Good luck!
