Hi,

i'm going on holidays to London in september and wanted to ask you for some nice places to take pictures of the city (appart form the typical touristic sites). I'm interested in urban photograpgy. This question would be for people living there or others that know the city pretty well.

Thank you in advance for the info.

  • Visit the markets but do it early : Borough Market on the left bank, etc.
  • Spitalfields is a trendy underground-cultury type area
  • by all means : take a subway to Greenwich and climb up to the observatory for a view of London; then catch a boat back that will take you through the docklands towards Westminster : the view of the city from aboard a boat is quite different.
Here's a gallery you could take a look at for some more ideas (I was there last January) :

  • It's also a good idea (if you have the time) to take the extension of the subway that takes you to the farther docks on the Thames (like Albert and Victoria Dock). Interesting architecture there.
Here's another gallery that I shot mianly in those areas (but also downtown) while visiting the London Triathlon in 2008:

And the Triathlon itself with some more scenery (this was a UKPSG trip in the good old days) :

One suggestion, walk along the south bank of the river from Waterloo/The Millenium Wheel to The Tate Modern/Millenium Bridge at different times of the day. The view of the city landscape to the north is fantastic and changes with the light, dusk is very good. On the other side of you is all life from rich theatre goers to urbam skateboarders and grafiti artst. And visit the Tate Modern while you are there even if you aren't into art. The entrance hall is what photographers dreams are made of (and it's free).

Richmond and Kingston is definitely not on the ordinary tourist’s list. They are not exactly part of London but not very far out. Especially Richmond is worth a visit, and if you are lucky you might meet one of the Rolling Stones... My lips are sealed about who, and about where in Richmond. Anyway, even if you don't meet him or not interested of him it is worth a visit.

Have a nice time anyway. Even if you won't leave London I am sure you won't be bored.

Hi Roel,

thank you for the tips. I will follow them for sure.

About your pictures, they are really nice. I would like to know what are thes places:
Here are the locations:

Grand Lobby of British Museum

Globe Theatre (Shakesperean Age reconstruction)

Just a random street on the South Bank, near Tate Modern

Near Victoria and Albert Dock
Thank you again

Anywhere around Tower Bridge or THe Tower of London. Take a good wide andle lens. I took lots of pictures recently in London using my 11-22. The view from the London Eye is excellent.
