Digital vs. Film Clarity

How do they compare? Wonder if this discussion ever occured with comparison to film.
Probably not over the Internet.

First, I think the OP is long gone. It looks like he just made his 19 word post 4 days ago to see what he could hook, and vanished. He's either an innocent who just hit the magic formula for a good flame war and then vanished by chance, or a pretty highly skilled troll. Take your pick...

Second, no one posted a link to Clark's article, or it would have been debunked, like it always is. So very many things wrong with it, from his monochrome numbers being way low, to his color film numbers being a bit high, to his MF and LF numbers not taking into consideration that the best lenses made won't match the film LP/MM figures he uses, so things get "throttled". There's a reason he hasn't updated that page in 5 years...

p.s. Bikini Chris, 50 years ago today, Bryan Hyland's song Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini hit number 1 on the US chart...

Good to know that. maybe you should update and publish a better version. Including graphs.

Thanks for the note about the song. My handle is intended to highlight one of my other jobs:

I've done 20x30 prints from my 6MP DSLR and they are awesome . . . much sharper and less grain (noise) than any 35mm 20x30 print I've ever made.
Something tells me you "improved" when you switched to digital then. Film is quite (extremely) capable of 20x30 prints that are as good and better than one from a 6MP dSLR. It's all in your technique.
I think the point was simply that one can obtain a decent 20x30 from a 6mp DSLR. Will it be detailed and sharp....depends upon to what it is compared.

When I first when down to Arizona, I brought my Canon 10D and my Bessa R2a rangefinder. The rangefinder was loaded with Ilford Delta 100 and Fuji Astia 100. There is no doubt that the 20x30 prints I made from the 10D looked OK. Were they as detailed as the scans from a Nikon 5000 at that size.....not by a long shot. Was the film grainier.....you bet.

In the end, they looked different. I chose the film for the large prints simply because I prefered the look.
Don't you know it's against the rules (section 41, paragraph 5) to talk about things like film and digital looking "different" and it being the artist's choice as to which look he prefer? Paragraph 6 and 7 clearly state that you have to take a stand as to either film being clearly superior to digital, or digital being overwhelmingly better than film.

You did it elsewhere in this thread, too...

"For dynamic range and latitude, digital is better than some films and worse than others."

"And finally, regardless of pixels, etc....film looks different."

You could be jailed for that. In some jurisdictions, you could be stoned, or burnt alive. Or stoned while being burnt alive. And drawn, and quartered. All at once. And keelhauled. I'm not sure how it's possible to burn someone alive while keelhauling them (which I believe requires being underwater) but we will find a way!

Maybe magnesium based flares...

I'm just waiting for Scott Eaton to appear to tell all the film users they're awful photographers and we're all stupid. Then we'll get a lecture on his running a prolab, etc, etc. LOL!

That link has been a laughingstock for years....along with the LL 3mp D30 vs Provia that has everyone laughing for years.

Anytime I see think links posted a proof of anything, I just laugh and roll my eyes.

I sell and fit custom made bicycles. Mostly racign bikes, but I have done many bikes for other uses. I also do repairs and teach cycling techniques like traffic riding and vehicular cycling. Something your average American knows absolutley nothing about. Sports photography is only part time for me. Not much money in any of that, but I enjoy it.

Your tip about the screwdrivers a while back was good. I have never had any trouble with phillips screwdrivers, but if I lend out a screwdriver, it always comes back ruined.

It's hard to find really useful pages dealing with controversial subjects. Either people are pushing an agenda (like the Michael Riecheman page that Dave mentions elsewhere in this thread, or they're trying to promote themselves as authorities on the subject.

I think the second kind of page is actually worse. People like Reichman always shoot themselves eventually, and lose their credibility, but the academic types just sort of go off in a "different" direction, because they get more standing in their field by doing that than by building on something someone else has done.

Yeah. I don't know what either of those things even mean, although I could make an educated guess about "traffic riding". Vehicular cycling could be cycling around other vehicles (like cars and trucks) or traveling with a bike or two attached to a car or truck, or trying to use a bike as a primary vehicle.

Here in Detroit, bicycles are seen as heretical, when ridden by adults. They're not participating in the Motown economy.

Shhhh...

Don't speak the name, and especially, don't speak it three times. I've seen that in too many horror films: nothing good ever comes of invoking certain names.

Bingo. Vehicular cycling is using a bicycle in traffic filled roads as a means of transportation. Learning lane position and understanding (and circumventing) the kinds of things car dirvers do to cause crashes makes riding much easier. It also makes you a better car driver.

If I was in Detroit, I would rather see someone riding a bicycle than a Toyota.

BTW, Henry Ford, Albert Champion, and most of the early car moguls started out as bicycle racers. They saw more money in cars. The first roads in this country were paved because the bicylists lobbied for it. This made the motor car a more sensible place to drive and it's been downhill ever since.

I wouldn't say that... I thought Clark's page on Evaluating Filter Quality was the first good example of usefull information I've come across regarding the clear protective filter for lens protection vs no filter wars. Instead of being based on simple opinioin and personal beliefs like virtually all other discussions of that subject, his take is based on simple physics, example photos, and realistic guidelines. But I will admit he can go off on a tangent with some topics.

Speaking of which, where's Joe L these days?
I believe he choked on his own bile.... ;-)
He's not around much in the summer, and when he is, he's relatively sane. I've observed that he only really gets nasty in fall and winter. After watching him do that cycle for three years, I pointed out to him that I think he has SAD, seasonal affective disorder. He shows all the symptoms.

He just about went through the roof. Personally, I thought it's an idea worth exploring: if I'm right, he could literally turn his entire life around with a $100 desk lamp.

i was there when there was no digital and seen it all happening in front of me .....

every one thinks using film for imaging is better then the new high end digital imaging devices(cameras) should ask him/her self why the main camera makers(who makes there living from imaging) stopped making film cameras.... few more years and LF cameras will say goodbye too.....

digital is here to stay though not perfect yet its heading that way because there is no time to waste and no looking back

someone must start a final film vs digital web site( or at least a forum here) to end people wonder and time waste.
I was there too, and I am not looking back either. Digital is not better than film in every way, but it is more predictable, and far, far, easier to work with. Think for a moment about what we mean when we use the term "film". We mean 35mm, medium format, or perhaps 4x5 sheet film, but we do not mean contact prints made from 8x10 wet plates. However, just as those newer formats replaced the wet plate, that earlier process still held some advantages that the smaller formats could never come close to matching. It is just the same way with digital.

....What user ID he'll create this time. After Joe L, Digserv, Yuzooskar, Dandanelia100, Ludwig100, etc, etc, I'm curious to see what he comes up with this time ;-)
