Hi all, just a few minutes ago I posted in a reply to my previous thread on looking for body caps:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1042&message=35963123

I wanted to create a new thread so people looking for this info can find it real easy - you can order both the body cap and rear lens cap from Sony Parts and Accessories. The body cap is only $2.65, but the rear lens cap is a rip off at $25.95 (see links below).

The body cap is currently out of stock, but at least its found so people can get on the list if you want to buy more than one or if Sony customer support has told you to go away, placed a restraining order on you etc ;)

Body cap: https://servicesales.sel.sony.com/ecom/accessories/web/viewItemDetail.do?operation=getItemDetail&itemID=711341&searchOperation=partSearch&searchText=418853601

Rear Lens cap: https://servicesales.sel.sony.com/ecom/accessories/web/viewItemDetail.do?operation=getItemDetail&itemID=708835&searchOperation=modelSearch&searchText=1855

Since the rear lens cap is so expensive I HIGHLY recommend you look at third party options - I just received my pair of rear caps from ebay (seller Jinfinance) today and they are very nice, though they dont look like original Sony caps, I dont really care:

http://cgi.ebay.com/2-rear-lens-cap-Sony-NEX-E-NEX-5-NEX-3-NEX-3-NEX-5-/360285034585?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Lens_Accessories&hash=item53e2a95859

If the eBay listing linked above has closed, use this link to search his store for the cap:

http://stores.ebay.com/RJ-camera-accessory-store__W0QQ_scZ1QQ_sidZ23670291QQ_sopZ2?_nkw=nex+cap&submit=Search

Not trying to be annoying by posting this in a new thread, just trying to make it easier for anyone looking for body/rear caps for their NEX so they dont have to read every reply in past threads... All I did was search Sony's parts site for them, it was other users that found the part numbers (see my previous thread linked above). For future reference, the part numbers are - Body Cap 418853601, and Rear Lens Cap 415970102.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for posting this info.

So if I'm about to order the dual lens kit, how many/which caps do I need? I'm not sure what comes with the kit. I feel like I'm being lazy asking this and not searching (although I semi-recall some confusion about what is supposed to be included with the camera), so thanks for anyone taking the time to answer!

"how many/which caps do I need?" for the two lens kit

You get two lenses and one body. You keep one lens on the camera. So you need one rear lens cap (for the unattached lens). And that is what you get besides two front lens caps - one rear lens cap.

There is little need for a body cap, you can just put on the pancake lens; it's very small. That's the point. There is no body cap provided in any kit.

And that is what you get besides two front lens caps - one rear lens cap.
Sorry, still confused.

Do you mean 'That's what you get' (comes with), or 'that's what I [need to] get' (doesn't come with)?
i.e., does the kit come with 0 or 1 rear lens caps?
Thanks for the help.

"And that is what you get besides two front lens caps - one rear lens cap. "

I have read this sentence three times and I still do not see any ambiguity. This is what you get, you receive, comes with, is in the package, is included, is standard.

The point was that what you need is what you actually get, receive, is included, comes with...

Sorry, could not help myself, but hope this helps you! You get one rear lens cap with the two lens kit, no body cap is included, or comes with it, or is standard.. (and you really do not need it, also).

Ok so in that case I will have to purchase 1 rear lens cap, 2 body caps, a front lens cap, and 2 rear lens caps?

But seriously, thanks for your help and clarification; upon rereading, it is less ambiguous than i thought... just wanted to make sure! Guess I have a thick head!

No, hes saying you dont need to purchase anything extra at all, the kit comes with the one rear lens cap you need. You can buy the kit and not buy another thing. If however you want a body cap so you can protect the body when no lens is attached, or if you want an extra rear lens cap so you can have both lenses off the camera and still be protected, you can get an extra one. That was the only point of my post.

The kits also include front lens caps...so you dont need to buy those either.

All of the kits come with the bare minimum, probably to save cost or because of some oversight, normally when you buy a DSLR kit it includes body and rear lens caps, most of the NEX kits do not, except the dual lens kit includes the one rear body cap.

To summarize: if you WANT (not NEED) a body cap or extra rear lens caps, then you can buy the items referenced in my first post, otherwise, just buy the kit, you do not need any other caps at all, nothing, nada, nil, zilch, zero, zip, etc.

good info, thanks. But - I can't believe they ship to the US only. Is there a sony-parts & accessories site that would ship to Europe? :) or can anyone buy more body caps and put them to eBay? I'd be the first to get one :))

This current situation of having a short supply of body caps shows that Sony never expected users to want a body cap & I find this a bit laughable. Have they not read users comments about carrying such cameras in pockets etc. The issue of dust contaminating the sensor when the body is stored is an acute one as the sensor is totally naked & very prone to collecting dust & dirt.

This is blatant penny-pinching in the first place , just how much would proper caps, advertising the Company, have cost to supply in the kit , just pennies ! Instead some naive users may well ruin their cameras by incorrect use & storage.

This deplorable situation is then compounded by over-charging for the lens caps ! Don't Sony realise that this is totally counter-productive & will not win them friends ??

In the bad old days lenses came with all caps & a leather container & were fully boxed , these days you are asked if you want a plastic bag to carry away your new purchase , ah ! this is progress !

I found this info on a google search which provided Sony Parts and Accessories Center info for nearly every region of the world, unfortunately most do not have websites it appears, so you will have to call to inquire or place orders. I tried to paste the info from the link, but it was longer than 6000 characters, so you will have to go to the link below:

Hope this helps!
