For each challenge, we have raised the image-per-person limit to 5. Those of you who agonized over which images to select now can do a little more agonizing. Hopefully this will generate enthusiasm among those who have not entered.

Talking about enthusiasm, Rick, I would be motivated a bit more if I knew why I need a pbase account (maybe only temporarily, though) to take part in the challenges. Makes no sense to me. So, why can't we all simply send our pics to dpreview? After the first three places have been sorted out, you still have to ask for the RAW files anyways, right?

This question may already have been answered by some of the challenge hosts. But I didn't see it so far. Maybe, I overlooked it and it is burried in the long thread of the original announcement. (Sometimes it is hard to work through all the posts which are or are not related to an original post).

Another question, if you don't mind. I understand that Sigma wants to have the final word and that sometimes a winning jpg may not be so great if printed large scale, even if this is done from the RAW file. But on the other hand, I don't like the idea that the community votes can easily be overruled afterwards.

Last question. As far as I understood, Laurence will do the prints, right? There is no question that he will do a good job. For sure, he has better skills that I have. To get the best result, he will have to play with the files, though. How is it guaranteed that the result is still up to the photographer's intention? Sometimes "the best" in technical terms is not what one wants to have. Is there a feedback loop to the owner of the pic.

I hope you and the other hosts don't feel critiziced by my questions. These points are just unclear to me.

Last remark. I do miss a lot of the big names in the challenges. (your pics are great, btw). Do you see any reason for that? There are so many amazing Sigma pics out in the internet and we all could easily name a lot "masters of the Foveon". So far, their contribution is very low. Same holds for a lot of those who contribute very often to the Sigma threads.

Regards,

Frank

You don´t need a pbase-account.

You can choose to use images from a pbase-account or alternatively just upload your image directly.
Guenter, you need to be more specific. Directly to drpeview? Or pbase? If I can still uplpad directly to dpreview, what about the challenge rules which definitely state that the pictures must be uploaded to pbase?

It's confusing, isn't it. Can't we get a clear explaination from one of the hosts? Please!

For Sigma use, the full size JPEGs have to be uploaded to the sigmadslr users gallery so that they can be adjudged for quality, hence need for full size, meaning the optimum size (middle one) from SPP at Level 12 JPEG.

The Challenges on dpreview for the different camera models is to add some extra interest - so not actually necessary to send any images to them if you do not wish to. These can be a smaller size and lower level JPEG (I have made mine 8" longest side, 100ppi and Level 8 JPEG).

To upload to the sigmadslr gallery (relative to the camera model) you need the username and password - easily obtained from Rick Decker or Laurence Matson. If you are unfamiliar with using a pbase account, ask for guidance but one tip, rename the files you are sending to have, say, your name first for identification in case you find adding (editing) your name as the Author baffling.

As, when and if one or more of your images is/are selected - on the pbase sigmadslr gallery sites - you would be given directions on how to submit the X3F RAW file.

Hope that clarifies. It really is quite straightforward. The Challenges is virtually unconnected to the selection for use by Sigma but encouraged to provide extra interest for all the Sigma Forum members. (Well, that's how I read it)

Although I have submitted (smaller) images into the Challenges for the SD9 and SD14 sections, I personally dislike competitions as such and would normally avoid them like the plague. :-P

Thank you zone8. This makes sense and I assume that you are right with your interpretation. But clearly, the rules as written in the pdf file (link in the challenge rules) as well as the announcement by Rick interrelate both. (I am definitely not nitpicking here).

I still hope that one of the challenge hosts answers to my post. There was more than one question in it.

I partly agree, competitions have a lot of downsides. On the other hand, if you don't take them too serious...

Cheers, Frank

If you didn't get everything answered, you can send me a message via DPR or email. As far as printing goes, you can imagine how hard L works to get the most out of images for printing and how seriously he takes his job. I can tell you that the last thing he wants to do is to have to email someone to say "Hey your image couldn't be printed to A1". Me neither.

He wants to print the image with your interpretation and not his. That is why, if you read the fine print, the guidelines say:

"If your image is selected and your processing is very difficult to duplicate, you may be asked to submit a tiff file according to the specifications necessary for printing along with the RAW file."

As for some of the old-timers not participating, I can't answer that.

Good Luck

To avoid "disappointment" and save bandwidth, my entries at dpreview are at full size AND JPEG 12. So Rick and/or LM, just right click and "save as" if you want to fine tooth comb through the pictures.

To upload your images to the SUG photokina 2010 gallery on PBase. Okay, here's the procedure:

1. Go the PBase Gallery at: http://www.pbase.com/sigmadslr/photokina_2010
2. Login using the User Name: +++++ and the password: +++++.
3. Click the "All Galleries" link at the top of the page.
4. Click the "Photokina 2010" gallery at the bottom of the page.
5. Click the gallery of the camera you want to enter a photo for.

6. When the gallery pictures are displayed, click the "Edit this gallery" link near the top of the page.
7. Follow the PBase instructions to navigate to your image and then upload it.
8. Be sure to enter your name with the image.
9. Make sure you logout when you have finished.

+ Note: you still have to get the Username and Password from Rick or Laurence.

I hope this helps.

The Dpreview challenge is the qualifying process for the Sigma camera model exposition, Brian.

If one wants to be considered for this, participiate in the challenge + upload image to pbase.
