Fill The Hole! (In My Kit)

If feel you need a higher quality 24mm than the 24-70L don't go to the 24-105L!

Get the 24 1.4 II or maybe sell the 24-70L if the IS version comes out next month and is better. Or if the 16-50 IS rumour is real.

or maybe you need to go wide and then the 17mm TS-E

anyway how can we know what to fit in that slot? I might toss a 24mm TS-E II in there but who is to say you would ever use it? I might toss (ok cram and mash) a 300 2.8 IS in there. If I could get a lens and cost was no issue heck i'd cram (somehow) an 800 f/5.6 in there. you don't even say what you shoot

heck you might not need anything more

although then again it is true that IS can help a lot when you can't use a tripod so in taht way the 24-105 might be better, but at the least i'd wait to see about some new 24-70 IS or 16-50 IS or something next month, maybe they show, maybe not
but at this point it's just a month away

If you were good enough to know how to use that five-figure kit, you'd be good enough to know what lens you need next without asking us.

The 24-105 is an excellent portrait lens. Enough bokeh to keep things interesting, and with superior contrast and color saturation.

The 24-70, in a word, is becoming dated. Third party lenses are its equal in all areas except AF speed. Unless you're using your 24-70 for sports or toddlers, a blazing AF is not really a strong consideration. The 2.8 makes the 24-70 a bit nicer for bokeh, but with better high ISO performance, its becoming less important for ambient light shooters.

The 24-105 has stronger vignetting wide open, but, you're also getting a better focal range for the same weight. When it comes to portraiture, vignetting is not really much of an issue.

If you use your equipment to take pictures of test patterns, the 24-70 is all that. If you want a lens that will make you money, get a 24-105.

As far as the hole in your kit - a low light prime, probably 35 or 50mm would be a nice addition. Other than that, you're well covered.

Ambient light is the best light.

Thanks all For all the help...

Most of you have been great... except for a few WA's...

I've taken home a 24-105 f/4L from Abes... He told me the only way to know is to try it!

And he was right! I LOVE IT.

Although it covers almost the same range... I find I would use one or the other depending on the situation.

If I were shooting a Boxing match ringside let's say I would go with the 24-70 2.8L... It Focuses faster, and the extra light will help get a faster shutter speed to freeze action.

It would also use it for Portraits if I wanted the 2.8 to blur the background out.

It is very slightly better IQ at 2.8 than the 24-105 is @ f/4. and @ f/4 it's a little better still...

This Copy of the 105mm that I have is I feel exceptional...

It's strengths I feel are for Car shows, and museums lets say... Static subjects where there might be limited light... I took shots @ 1/4 that came out great.

PLUS it's so much easier to handle the camera! It's more balanced, and much more of a pleasure to walk around shooting without a tripod or flash! And the Extra Reach really is nice too!

I LOVE IT, and this is what staying on the camera...

Again I feel this is a great copy... Beautiful shots right out of the box... Contrast and color are on par with my 24-70 2.8L

I might still add a EF 35mm f/14L into the mix, and maybe and extender for the 100-400mm L IS

But I think I pretty much set... Thanks to all (some) of you Again!

I am a bit confused now. It does not mean weighted average does it? Somebody please send me message and explain me what does it mean, thanks! :)

I am actually happy that this time I was not the only one who was rude and cruel and evil and honest and unfriendly, now I actually led the pack of brutal wolves... :D

Hope your injuries heal well.

Hope the lens you chose fits in your hole well and you will have lots of fun with it.

I have a few things I could fit in your "hole". One of them being a size 12.

I can't imagine what kind of person would glean so much glee out of inflicting injuries on someone?

Obviously it's not your fault, it's your Mothers... Because she didn't raise you right... Mine did, and she taught me that If I didn't have anything nice to say that I should keep my mouth closed. She raised me right, that is why I support and take care of both my Parents by myself. Between work, and their care I put in 70hrs a week. Not much time for anything else...

Including taking pictures. That is my life right now, but not forever... I had my 1d for 8 years, and figure I will have this one for a long time too... I love it, and am grateful to the forum for helping make the decision to get it... It's a shame two bad apples like yourselfs spoil things...

We didn't have a lot of money when I was a kid.. I had a cheap 35mm slr, and used to develop pictures in my basement... I DREAMED OF THE DAY, when I could afford a kit like this... and now that I'm doing better for myself and them as well, I have it, I may not be the most proficient with it, YET, but it is the fulfillment of a dream... There are so many people here who have so much talent, and knowledge that I respect, and I aspire to be capable enough to get the most or the majority out of what I have now... I just wanted to know that I have everything I need, and relax, and in the spare moments take some pictures... Like I have with my 1d original for the last 8 years... I haven't had the time to keep up with the latest, so I turned to what I felt were "Friends" to help me.

I have been a member here since 1999 and was one of the first to have a D30. I have never, and will never be Senselessly cruel to someone. But my Mother also taught me to defend myself as well as my father... that's why I weightlifted and boxed my whole life.

If you want to insult someone you should do yourself the justice of doing it to their face.... Instead of hiding behind your keyboard like a coward and throwing barbs at people...

If you live anywhere near NYC, I can be at B&H on any Sunday Morning... I invite you to meet me there, and insult me to my face so you can really get some satisfaction... Just PM me, and we will set it up.

But I don't think you will... It's so easy to hide behind the screen like a child for you, isn't it now?

The offer stands, and will always stand.

Again thanks to all that were kind enough to offer your most valid, and valued opinions.

24-105 is a very nice lens indeed. Also consider the 35L, which could likely now replace your 24-70.

I've scoured and scoured your very neat sponge-case. I see that you have made an excellent investment in a 1D IV. For this, I salute you. What I do not see in your sponge-case is a backup body. Woe unto thee who shows up at a gig or travels to a destination without a backup.

Dot,

Yes, you are right... Thank's for the suggestion.

I have in a smaller Pelican Case that I used before my aquisitions forced me to move into a bigger case with, my Trusty Original 1D, in Mint condition.

It also has a EF 28-135mm IS which I thing might be Canon's best Non L Zoom.

Since altough I spent $5,499 when It was in limited supply and brand new, it is now worth only $400 I'm told. I figured it would do great for a backup, and adverse condition camera... Or for when I just need shots for a Website, etc.

Thanks You!

Tony B.
