Here is another S90 photo from my morning walk today. Raw PP'd with DXO Pro6. I thought it was a beautiful home and yard.

Nice shot, Tom.

How do you decide to shoot at -1/3 EV vs 0 EV?

Your earlier shots comparing the s90 and the g9 were at 0 EV and this shot is at -1/3 EV. The subject matter seems to be similar.

Appreciate your taking the time to teach someone new to the s90.

Thanks

Hi Mr. Roger,

If you notice in the earlier shot the restaurant filled most of the frame, whereas in this shot the house filled a smaller part of the frame than did the darker trees. The camera therefore tried to make the trees lighter and in doing so made the house to light with blown highlights when set to 0 EV. By lowering the EV to -1/3 I was able to get a proper exposure on the house and later my post processing software made the whole scene look properly exposed. I could always lighten the trees, but once the house highlights were blown, they would not be recoverable.

Hope that helps, Tom

Thanks for your kind comments. We live in a great part of the state...convenient to many beautiful areas. This house is along the Delaware/Raritan canal with the Delaware River just on the other side.
Wow, technically and artistically beautiful...I want to live in your neighborhood!

Tom,

I'm beginning to see that taking the picture is only the first step.

After your explanation of why you choose the EV's you did, I went back and used iPhoto on some of my photo's. iPhoto can't approach the sophistication of DXO, but some photos which were marginal cleaned up very well.

Maybe I'll try my hand with DPP and shoot a few shots in RAW to fool around.

Again, thanks for the advice.

I'm glad to help...it really takes a lot of trial and error, and a lot of reading about exposure and how all the variables fit together. I think you are on the right track. Best of luck!
