Given my camera calls for a circular polarizer with a thin frame. Would I achieve the same results with the next larger filter and a step up ring? Sorry for the novice question I searched but did not find.

Thanks in advance.

Scott

Scott, I hope I'm understanding your question...so correct me if I'm not. I'm assuming that you can't obtain a filter to fit your camera, so you're considering another size filter and will need an adapter ring to attach it to your camera. If this is correct - yes, it will work just fine. I will make note that on some of my filters which required adapter rings....there was just a bit of vignetting (hope I spelled that correctly).

Probably not, as the step up ring will cause vignetting that the thin filter probably would not. In other words, the step up ring will be too thick.

Given the high price of good CPL's (have a Hoya Pro1, cost over $100), I bought the largest I could find (77mm) to future-proof against any large lenses that I'd get in the future and use step-up rings on smaller lenses with no ill-effects. Got the idea from Dave Lloydy here (thx Dave!). Did the same with my Expodisc Neutral WB filter (also over $100). I currently step up from 4 different sized lenses, so it is a huge cost saving over buying seperate filters.

In a lot of cases it will work okay, but did you notice the OP said his camera calls for a thin filter? That means to me a step up ring will probably be too thick and will vignette but it might be worth trying. What do you do about hoods; get one to fit the 77mm?

Thanks for the answers. Lloydy and Busch seem to have different takes on the subject....

Busch said: "Probably not, as the step up ring will cause vignetting that the thin filter probably would not. In other words, the step up ring will be too thick. "

For Busch, this is exactly what I was worried about. The thin frame on the 58mm filter is supposed to limit the vignetting that I anticipate at wide angle. Having been down that road before it is a huge cause for concern. That is why I figured on getting the filter wider than the lens mount at 58mm thinking that the ring would be thinner than the thinnest CPL filter...... Then the bigger filter (more glass) would not be in the view of the corners of the picture.

For Lloydy..... does it work? No vignetting I mean.... If so what size did you start with? And secondly, what are the drawbacks to my plan?

Does this get me around the need for the thin frame? (the reason I don't want the thin frame is that I am worried about the lack of threads on the front of the filter)

What about the lens hood??? ( I don't have one but still want to keep the sun off the front of the lens in the future thus I desire one)

Thanks Again Scott

... The setup I described is on the S100 fs and there is no vignetting. The step-up ring fits flush with the front edge of the lens.

On the HS-10, I use a Sony 'thin' CPL. This works very well without vignetting, it is not front threaded though. Not a big deal as I don't want to 'stack' more filters on.

I have a lens hood on the S100 fs but none on the HS-10. When using the CPL, on the S100 fs, I take the hood off. Not having one is not a big drawback as you can shield the lens with your hand.

Cheers.
