My new Quantaray Titan II monopod arrived today from Ritz Camera and it's exactly what I was looking for!

Thanks RichO for the tip.

There may be much better, and certainly more expensive, 'pods out there, but this one suits this amateur perfectly. It's the right size and weight; feels right; has quick-rellease and built-in panhead, and can easily double as a billy-club!
I tried it out a little while ago with the sunset and am very happy with it.

I've got the same one and feel the same as you do about it. I've had other monopods but this is the one I like best. Sold the others.

Hi Richard,

Bob S is the one who put me onto the tip...when I went into a local Ritz here and asked about it the salesman was a bit surprised that I knew about it. He said it was one of the best bargains they had.

I love it. It is actually a bit more than you need for the UZi, but it is sturdy and I figure it will be good for my DSLR whenever I buy one!

Funny about the billy club... when I went to the Cowboys Training Camp (Ms Kaila was envious) I was not allowed to bring the monopod inside...they considered it a potential weapon... But I was allowed to take into a Ranger game when I was visiting my son in Dallas...so beware...sometimes it might not be allowed in certain venues, but out and about it is great. I usually have the camera attached to it as I go about shooting.

Bob and I have had good results using it with the IS on which is another benefit.

When I went to Wolfs to see about a mono they were out and then the one guy said I think we have one in the back that was returned. So off he went and came back with the box it was open and the the box was a mess but the mono looked ok. They said this is what they carry and would have some in next week. Well I ask them if I could buy that one and they talked it over and sold it to me for $19.95.
I love it and it works real nice,

I have one too; great price and it works very well; also has a quick-connect plate on it.

I find my self removing the the tilt handle and it still stable (the handle gets in the way). Also I use it backwards, that is I have the tilt handle (now removed) away from me; the reason is that the threads of the quick-release plate are such so that if you tilt the camera 90 degrees, the weight of the camera, loosens the connection (it basically unscrews itself ).

I do this because I use a C-4040 with a B-300, which are just heavy enough to loosen the thread.
Your thoughts on this are welcome.

I know that everything haves to do with the likes and needs of any one , but i do enjoy more the tripod than the monopod ..
Even if my own tripod it can used also as monopod . ;-)

I have a Quantaray. The tripod not monopod but I agree with everything you said about it being an excellent piece of equiptment for amatures with an excellent price tag.

No problems with the product, it just doesn't work for me. Quality product.

I really want to try panoramas and the tripod might help the accuracy of my photo alignments.

Will likely purchase a tripod in the $40-$60 price range. I need the stability and will sacrifice the convenience.

I really wish that it was able to do the job. I have a walking stick that I can use for support when I don't have the tripod. Guess that will have to do...

Mike,
I agree that the tripod is better as a support, as I just mentioned
to olyboy. But, I got the mono as an extra piece of gear for those
times when hauling the tripod around just isn't practical.

Mike,

I would keep the monopod or get a tripod like OlyBoy where one of the legs can detach and be a monopod.

I have 3 tripods and a monopod.

I have yet to find a good tripod that is as utilitarian as my monopod.

My next tripod purchase with be one the has a true pano head, vertical and horizontal levels and detachable monopod with titanium alloy...it will cost over $100 without the head.

It will extend to 72 and collapse to 24" and double as a macro-mini pod with the head attachable underneath.

It will be rock sturdy and have a remote release builtin.

I get really great panos handheld with my Uzi and even better ones with the monopod... I need the tripod for

Why would you use a billy-club on a sunset?

What is the brand/model of the tripod you're describing?

I have the Bogen 3021N, rock solid with great height (including the center column) but it was too heavy for my hiking. Then, I bought a Gitzo carbon fibre 1128. Good height with the center column extended and rock stable as long as I hang my backpack on the center column hook. It's extremely light... with the Bogen 3437 head, it's only about 3.25lb. Also, I have the Bogen 3231 monopod. This monopod has 3 legs that it can stand still on its own.
