I recently got a new 4GB SD mem card for my camera, but I got a "Memory Card Error" message. I've tested it on other cameras and it works fine.

I googled it and seemingly, my model is probably too old for this 4GB memory card. I read somewhere that I cannot use SDHC. How do I know beforehand, cause nowhere on my card is there written SDHC or anything...

So if I get a new 2GB SD card, can I be sure that it will be usable with my camera? Can a 2GB SD card also be SDHC?

Thanks

Everything that can use SDHC cards can also use SD cards, but the reverse is not true. A device must be designed for SDHC in order to use SDHC cards.

There are also some older cameras that can only read SD cards below a certain capacity. For example, a 2GB SD card will not work in some Kodak Easyshares. So you need to research your camera before buying even an SD card.

2GB and smaller are SD cards, 4GB and larger are SDHC cards. (I'm not sure where SDXC starts.) If you got a 4GB card that does not have the SDHC logo on it, something is off.
