Hi Folks,

I am having a heck of a time making a mask of the sky in this photo. I have cs5 and have tried color selection, mask with a soft brush etc., etc., etc. Can anyone help me with this and tell me what to do? I thank you very much for your effort.

I have CS3 but doesn't the magic wand do this?

The most accurate method is to use Channel Masks?

Here's a quick example...it still needs a bit of refining....the sky was created using the Render > Clouds filter....3 minutes.

Add a Selective Color adjustment layer. Make the Absolute button is selected in the dialog box, then choose Whites from the drop down list. Adjust the Cyan, Yellow and Black sliders to get the blue you want for the sky. Then use a cloud shaped brush to paint on the adjustment layers mask to make your clouds.

TOO EASY!! I'm not going to even think about what I use to do to correct this type of situation.

Thanks for sharing Sam....

selected all white w/magic wand, contiguous deselected. chose powder blue and white for colors> filter> render> clouds> OK. gc

Most excellent tip!! It's amazing the talent that is around.

I tried this, and I noticed I got a blue tinge into the grass area on the left side, so I just introduced a gradient in the mask to limit the colour change up in the sky only, then tried painting in the clouds... worked a dream!!!

Thanks Adrian :D Forgot to mention that in my original reply.

Anything that is white in the photo will also turn blue. To remove, people will have to paint with black on the mask to remove the blue tint from those areas.

Drop sky above original
set mode to darken
adjust opacity
mask off very lightly around trees

By the way. extended the sky height and made trees higher to accommodate a new sky

Here is

Best wishes

I've been practicing the Russell Brown technique for Advanced Masking.

There's no way I could even begin to explain this tutorial. But it's damn cool to watch!!! He makes it look so easy!!! Uses Channel Mixer, Dodge and Burn as the main points.

As you can clearly see, I still have a hard time blending in edges.

Anyway, the tutorial is free; a Quick-time download.

Here's a link to the site, the tutorial is at the very bottom, titled Advanced Masking: Old Stuff That's New.

Thanks for the play; agree with Sam. Used the darken technique and added some clouds via a cloud brush and some creative blending. Auto-leveled and liked the new colors so kept the look. :)
