What should I look for when buying a new monitor???

I posted the question earlier about what type of monitor people use and the results were very varied, some prefered LCD others swore by CRT…

I think I will stick with a CRT for now (money issue) and have decided on a 19'. But what colour adjustment features do I need to look for?

Thanks for any help…

Andrew

For every nonprofi (but very interested amateur) LCD is enough. Also color adjustment is not important. But there are quality issues in low price area. So just take a sony (-; ( I know no other trustable brands but I am sure there are some.) 1600*1200 for 4:3 images is sex ! Even also on notebook.

At new notebooks from brands you also can watch from the side angle.

If you go for a CRT, and want picture quality just make sure you get a Flat screen and a Trinitron or equivalent tube. Also when comparing, check on warrantees as some are significantly better than others. Some 1 year, some 3 years.

Ok, First. It doesn't matter if you use a flat screen or a traditional. LCD for someone new to the pic thing is not necessary. The most important thing you can have is individual color control. ie... be able to control each color separately. red green and blue. If you can't do that then you will have a hard time calibrating your monitor correctly. Also, the better the temp control the more accurate the calibration. Don't worry about flat or lcd, just find a name brand with those controls and you should be fine. 19" at Staples should not run more than $90-120 with rebate.

If I take the lens cap off, I get a lot better pictures.

well I just got a new monitor... A 19' mitsubishi Diamond View (Diamondtron)

I never knew what this forum looked liked until now :)

The colours are amazing, and the picture is soooo clear...

Anyway this is one happy camper and ready to try out the prints and see how close the monitor is to being perfect :)

Excellent choice, Andrew -- a very well established and trusted marque. I nearly bought one a month ago (also 19") but went for a Pro Series ViewSonic in the end after it got a rave review. It's extremely sharp, the colour and gamma are excellent, but the purity wanders all over the place and they'll be getting it back soon. You've done well sticking to a mainstream brand/model beloved of DTP/graphics professionals.

Hey Bubba,

What do you mean 'color adjustment is not important'?

Also, '1600 x 1200 is sex'?

Dood, lay off the head and stick to the leaf, the THC level is lower.

Hi Mike,

I was almost going to buy the Diamond Pro series but this monitor I got was a repackaged one so it was actually cheaper then the 17' diamond pro, and I still get the 3 year warranty on it. That is what swayed me to buy it.
