OK, I've googled and googled. How does one change sharpening levels within the NEX-5? Is that possible? I haven't had the camera long...and I know that some options/settings are context-sensitive...but I haven't been able to find any information about it, either by searching through the in-camera menus OR online.

I personally find that I need to sharpen pics from the NEX in PS afterwards. I'd love to be able to access any in-camera controls there to see if i can find settings I prefer.

BTW...I have only used jpeg fine settings for images. Do I need to shoot raw files as well to access these controls?

Help, and thanks.

It is in the manual; however, in the menu item "Brightness & Color" scroll down and select Standard and then the lower button is optiions. Press it and you can adjust contrast, saturation and sharpness. (Only applies to JPGs)

The Creative Style options are not available in iAuto or any of the Scene modes so make sure you are shooting in P,A,S,M, Panorama or Anti-Motion Blur modes (P if you want something automatic) with more camera control... like choosing and customizing a Creative Style.

D'oh!

I keep forgetting about the "Options" button in some modes.

Thanks for your help all.
I suggest that you use Sharpness+2 or +3
It will not carry to RAW files so you can always adjust that if you want.

I have never seen someone complain "this picture is too sharp booo" but i have seen a lot of people complain that the picture is "so soft"

I'm quite happy with sharpness +1 for most purposes.

It is naive to say there cannot be too much sharpening, or that no one notices. I have complained, and rightly so, that pictures are too sharp - with halos and other artifacts clearly visible. The Panasonic P&S cameras and camcorders have too much sharpening, for example. I have also seen examples of overuse of sharpening in pp, resulting in artifical-looking pictures. It is recomened for video use of the Panasonic GH1, for example, that in-camera sharpening be reduced (-1), the halo artifacts being so bad.

I'm talking about NEX only, for EPL1 for example the pictures are really sharp that you might even need to reduce it, but for NEX it seems even Sharpness+3 is acceptable, too many people complain about NEX output being soft and that's why i suggested to RAW+JPEG, keep the jpeg at Sharpness+2 or +3 depends on what are you shooting and the sharpness+ wont carry to raw so you can adjust the picture later.

OK, I just wanted to make sure people would not generalize this, although it still is not obvious that +2 is not too much even for NEX.
