... from my yard.

All hand-held with K20d, DA*300 and 540 flash for fill.

Immature male Ruby-throated Hummingbird feeding on lantana blooms

Salvia 'Wendy's Wish'

Silene regia - Royal Catchfly

Hmmm... interesting...

Think I'll have a look...

Zebra Swallowtail

Black Swallowtail - dorsal view

Black Swallowtail - ventral view

And finally... an answer to the age old question... "What happens to hummingbirds in a downpour?"

They get wet...

You're mastering this type of shooting. Nice stuff.

Handheld? No monopod? I'm jealous. The Black Swallowtail Ventral, easy to look at. P-TTL or Manual?

Bud,

Your hummingbird shots are among the best I have ever seen. I can see that lens serve you well. Awesome work and thanks for sharing!

The first one is fantastic!!
Thanks!
Do you find the flash makes a huge difference when photographing the hummingbirds? I am considering getting a flash for some of my nature photography but wondering if maybe a flash is the way to go?
I really like using the flash, especially in biright sunlight, because it helps to eliminate harsh shadows and can bring out a lot of the finer details in the feathers. I set the flash in HSS mode and the camera to either TAv or Av.

Thanks again for the comments,

Bud

gorgeous, Bud.

Colors and sharpness and subjects are great. I had to smile at the last shot of the drenched hummer. :)

Any chance you could post a wide view of your garden? Based on the snippets showing in these shots, they must be a hummingbird and butterfly paradise! How many years did it take to develop?

Thanks,

Tom
